Bob Elliott, comedy pioneer on radio and TV and father of star Chris Elliott, is dead at 92

Bob Elliott, who cracked up radio listeners for decades as half of the influential comedy duo Bob and Ray, died yesterday at 92, at his home in Maine. The cause was throat cancer.

Along with partner Ray Goulding, Elliott -- the father of comic actor and “Get a Life” star Chris Elliott -- had a career that spanned five decades, and work in television and movies along with radio.

The pair also hosted a TV show, “The Bob and Ray Show,” from 1951 to 1953.

The partnership ended when Goulding died in 1990. Elliott continued to make radio, TV and film appearances, serving as a cast member for Garrison Keillor’s Radio Company of the Air and appearing as Chris Elliott’s father on “Get a Life” and in the 1994 film “Cabin Boy.”

That's sad news, but not unexpected because he'd been in poor health for several years.  I've been a big fan of Bob and Ray for many years and plan to give my collection a workout this weekend.  I read their bio, Bob and Ray, Keener Than Most Persons, by David Pollock last year, and for the most part it's actually pretty dry, but that's because B and R were decent, devoted family men untouched by the faintest whiff of scandal. What I enjoyed most about the book are its accounts of the hectic, frantic craziness involved in presenting live radio programming day after day in the fifties.  Most of the time the producers, performers, and staff just made it up as they went along and it usually worked.  It's also interesting to read about the number and surprising variety of comedians who paid tribute to them and claimed to have been influenced by them in some way.

Famed Astronaut Edgar Mitchell Dies

Astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who was part of the Apollo 14 crew that flew to the moon in 1971, has died at the age of 85. He was a naval officer and aviator, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, and NASA astronaut. As the Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 14, he spent nine hours working on the lunar surface in the Fra Mauro Highlands region, making him the sixth person to walk on the Moon. Mitchell won the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Navy and NASA distinguished service medals. He was a member of the Astronaut Hall of Fame and the International Space Hall of Fame.

His experience on the moon affected him profoundly, leading to the founding of the Institute of Noetic Sciences which remains a leading edge organization in the area of scientific study of the mysteries of the human soul.

Edgar Mitchell was a friend of Whitley and Anne Strieber's and appeared on Dreamland on March 8, 2008. In a conversation with the Striebers, he expressed his belief that there were many alien species visiting Earth. Publicly, he was an outspoken advocate on behalf of the reality of such a presence, and a tireless advocate for UFO disclosure.

Whitley Strieber comments, "Edgar was a good friend and supporter. He told Anne and I that he knew many of the people who were dedicated to keeping  UFO secrets, and felt that their actions constituted a great disaster for mankind. He was a brilliant, tireless and profoundly honest man who fought to clear the web of lies in which our world has become trapped. He was a warrior in service to the highest of ideals: the truth and the dignity of man."

Dr. Mitchell was born and grew up in Roswell, NM and believed that the crash there was from an ET vehicle.

That is sad news to me. He was an amazing talent and entertainer, and was another of the many who deserved more money and acclaim than they received for whatever reason. I especially like his vocal arrangements with the mix of harmonies and intricate back and forth with the Lickettes. 

I never saw the Hot Licks in person, but I saw him with the Acoustic Warriors in a small club about twenty years ago, and he was outstanding. I'm going to miss him now that he's gone away.
