Alrighty.  I hope we're ok then. There's really so much going on in the video story line. I noticed earlier this evening for the first time that there's an initiation going on near the end with the skull.

Oh yeah. There's no ill will on my part. It's just been hard to tell a legitimate response from trolling here sometimes these days. I just mistook the tone of your response for that, I guess. Anyway, I wasn't trying to shit on your analysis, only add to it what I saw. They've definitely either formed a new religion or made Major Tom central to their exiting religion, which would probably radically alter it to the degree that it became a different religion anyway. The more I read and learn about Bowie the more I think he really must've been influenced by Clarke's Childhood's End, among other things. Did you see the miniseries? I've heard some people had problems with it but I though it was alright, though it's been years since I've read the book.

Meister and MD, it's been such a pleasure reading your posts and I so appreciate the fact that neither one of you resorted to insulting one another as has been happening so much of late.  Suffice to say that we are , the three of us, big fans of Bowie.  I honestly hadn't been paying much attention to him for the last few years.  I guess it's that trap...you don't really appreciate someone until they are gone.  The latest thing I read about him was that he was a very private person, that he only had several true friends and confidents.  A man after my own heart.  I'm going to mourn his passing...far longer than I did Lennon and James Brown, just to mention a couple.

Thanks Rix. Aside from "I'm afraid of Americans" he was pretty much off my radar since the mid-80's I guess. Nevertheless, I have many fond memories associated to his 70's and early 80's stuff. He's probably the only Artist I can think of who was hip enough to be esteemed by both his original followers and then again also in and by the Punk/New Wave scene and generation. So he's stamped upon me in both of those incarnations and musical periods, and favorite periods of my own life. And he was a Giant!

Spitballs were legal, they used one ball the whole game and the pitchers and catchers would scuff it up, cut it, and cover it with tobacco juice.

At least through 1920, but that all changed after Ray Chapman died from getting hit in the head with a scuffed up ball thrown by Carl Mays. After that, balls were regularly replaced a few times during games and the spitter, whose use had been curtailed was abolished except for seventeen pitchers who were allowed to continue using it.  I'm amazed that Chapman is the only major league player who died as a result of injuries received during a game. That seems almost impossible given all the risks involved in playing at that level.

Here's a brief account of the spitball ban:

"The spitball was banned in two stages. In the winter of 1919â€"1920, managers voted to partially ban the spitball, allowing each team to designate at most two pitchers who would be permitted to legally throw spitballs. Then, following the 1920 season, the spitball was banned leaguewide, except for existing spitballers who were grandfathered in and allowed to keep throwing the pitch legally until they retired.

Seventeen existing spitballers were granted this exemption. Burleigh Grimes lasted the longest, retiring in 1934.
