Critical Omissions with Douglas Dietrich

I was a kid living at Schofield Barracks when scenes for Tora Tora Tora were being made.  It caused quite a scene as I remember.

I was stationed at CINCPAC, Camp. H.M. Smith, Halawa Heights around that time and had occasion to be on Schofield Barracks Compound several times.

I believe the actual filming was spread out over about 4 years or so with a few scenes at different times on Oahu.  My father got his "choice of duty" after a tour in Vietnam in 1967-68 with the 95th EVAC at DaNang. I don't remember much about Hawaii because I was too young. Just a few memories of things but it was a great place to be.  I think I had the mumps though at one point.   We left Hawaii for Ft. Meade in summer 1972.  We had a lot of our stuff shipped back and in storage in Maryland during the move that was destroyed by a hurricane (Agnus) I think.

My mother was devestated by it. I did not realize what an impact this had until much later.

I recall hearing about the filming and attendant controversy before I was transferred back to the mainland in ‘68.  I thought Hawaii was great and have been back several times over the years for business and pleasure.  Yeah, Agnus was a bummer for a lot of people and I can see how your mom would be devastated.  No doubt she lost items that were irreplaceable.

Yes.  There was an electric Organ I remember. With 3 keyboards and foot peddles. An accordion with ivory inlaid keys.  All of our winter clothing.  Photographs. All the tapes my father recorded to us from Vietnam.  A 1969 VW Beetle.  All lost.

And the worst was when we were assigned to "Oslen Loop".  I think I was in second grade.  Then we were moved to 41A Faith Court Ft Meade, which was about 300 meters from a PX.

These were officers family quarters. To the rank of Major. Of course the kids discovered this and the small woods between the lower and higher officers kids became a "battleground" of sorts.  They had tree forts.  And BB guns.

We had nothing. So we threw "dirt clods" at them.

We already had ditches. So we flanked the fuckers by attacking them and forcing them to fight on the edge of the woods or attack us ....but we would make them go into the ditches first!

This was how we lived.  American children of Army Officers at play.  in 1975.

I have visited rural Pennsylvania, but at the time Philadelphia was still the 4th biggest city in the USA.

Uh, yes I  think I have an accurate perception of rural America. Driving a tractor-trailer took me to many places and the goods I delivered enlightened me to how rural people earned their living.
