Interesting... That ended up generally accepted by most of the world.  I'm off scouring the net trying to find out what tariff it was (specifically.)  There is lots written on the Smoot/Hawley tariff in the US (general claim is that exports declined from 5 to 1.5 billion because of retaliatory tariffs.)  But that is not what I'm after.  It was a tax on cotton, or nylon, or rubber... Something very specific- and my mind is not able to get there tonight...

The stupid thing is that I agree- we do need some tariffs on products.  Completely open free trade with the entire world is stupid.  The problem is that I am a little more moderate than Mr. 45% tariff on Chinese goods.  Destroying the economy of Gina is not going to make the US economy great again... Then again, Don is not know for moderation.

I personally don't think there are any benefits to tariffs, though obviously when dealing with rogue nations on labor or environmental standards imposing tariffs can be a way to deal with them.  Penalties like that are already sanctioned by the WTO.

It would be good, after some settling, like Swizterland etc. I don't mind higher prices for quality products, lower taxes, stable jobs (there you can see the same waiter making a decent living years later visiting,) and a clean country.

You want a country like Switzerland?  You may have to learn to accept universal health care and a touch of socialism.

As I said, it will be an interesting experiment to try some of these ideas that had been rejected for a long time out again.  Then again, who knows what President Trump will actually do or how much the Republican Congress will work with him.
