The book on the Industrial Revolution in the U.K that I'm offering for people here as a Christmas present describes why the U.K adopted an open trading system.

Interesting... That ended up generally accepted by most of the world.  I'm off scouring the net trying to find out what tariff it was (specifically.)  There is lots written on the Smoot/Hawley tariff in the US (general claim is that exports declined from 5 to 1.5 billion because of retaliatory tariffs.)  But that is not what I'm after.  It was a tax on cotton, or nylon, or rubber... Something very specific- and my mind is not able to get there tonight...

The stupid thing is that I agree- we do need some tariffs on products.  Completely open free trade with the entire world is stupid.  The problem is that I am a little more moderate than Mr. 45% tariff on Chinese goods.  Destroying the economy of Gina is not going to make the US economy great again... Then again, Don is not know for moderation.

I think Webb served 20 years in the marines, but after that he quit as Under Secretary of the Navy, he quit after one term in the Senate, and he checked out of that about half way in and he quit his Presidential race pretty much before he even announced he was in.

He's basically written books since 1988 which is a job he can quit and go back to at any time he wants, though I guess he probably has to meet deadlines.
