Papal Visit

Hey, politics is not divisive enough: let's talk religion (and some politics!) The Pope's visit. According to CNN he polls higher than any of our candidates and politicians in "likes" (media claims 75%.) If true, I don't trust polls, I find it interesting. Not too many decades ago the Pope was viewed with suspicion and even Catholics in general to an extent. Is this a result of his moderation? Blind obedience to the Roman dictator and immigration changes, as we are a far less Protestant country now? The Pope's attitudes trying to be a "common man"? People forgetting how rich the Roman Church is and the child abuse cover-up? Generally less religious people in the US and "liking" the Pope more in a secular, or pop-culture way?
ps: I miss seeing Malachi Martin as commentator on the visit. These guys suck compared to him....I also would be curious how Malachi would view this Pope and his attitudes/statements towards eucumenialism, abortion, divorce, homosexuals, "social justice," immigration (legal, refugee, and otherwise,) and politics.

I'm in! The Pope will be used as a prop for political agendas- global warming, immigrants, the evils of capitalism, and much more. I noticed that the Pope didn't meet with the Cuban dissidents when he was there. Grab some wine, sit back, and let the circus begin.

Last night I watched some of O'Reilly's show for the first time in years, and he spent the entire opening segment discussing the pope's political leanings.

I've never been so bored by a topic. It's utterly inconsequential. That's not a knock on this thread, BTW. It's just the thread reminded me of that.

I tried to watch a bit of it last night, and all they were talking about was the Fiat he showed up in. When did news turn into gossip? I'm surprised they didn't ask the Pope who he was wearing.

Controversial saint Serra is on the fast track to sainthood. His beatification was back in 1988 and has yet to fulfil the required proof of two miracles that would qualify Serra for canonization. Francis settled for one purported miracle in which a nun claims that she was cured of lupus after praying to Serra.

It took place today- the Native Americans of the region are not happy.

They have no interest in him or his views. Some of them have asked me "He isn't coming here is he?" the question not being posed in a "I hope I can see him" fashion, but a "That guy will fuck up traffic" way.

" what's the matter with you- he flew all the way over and had to wait for Mr important to finally show up- it's the Pope for Christ's sake! God damn it- you think they'd put out a better spread- he was probably hungry." Good times.

    A couple of relatives, who've taken vacations based around visting the Vatican, haven't even considered going 200 miles south to see The Pope in his NYC visit this week. Including one who went to see the Red Sox-Mets series last month. Baseball game in Flushing Meadows, no problem. Seeing "The Holy Father" in New York...he'll pass.

     Your Aunt was like mine(my Great-aunts really)...but the reigns of Cardinals Medeiros and Law napalmed much of the faithful in the Boston area.

What would Malachi say? Is what I keep thinking. The Papal "experts" on the news these days suck. Mostly just gushing over it, and him, despite record low attendance., and the issues not mentioned in history and church. Like a game in which the camera doesn't pan to the stands because the tickets are over-priced, the team is already out, and there aint anyone in the stands but the announcers are still playing it up like a WS game.

Watched the pope going into the NY church and I kep't getting an image of Guy squatting down in front of a black and white television.  (Rosemary's Baby - 1968).  He turns around to his wife, Rosemary, and excitedly exclaims, "It's the pope at Yankee Stadium!"

I didn't get it for for quite a few years but I guess that there was a direct tie-in going on.  See, the pope was relatively close by to the Woodhouse's apartment and, well, we all know what happened later that night.  At least thats what I think the book's author, Ira Levin, had in mind.  I'll have to watch the flick again to see if there's a link between the two events.

I'm old enough to remember John Paul II when he started out, and he was a real rock star for a while; every time he got off the plane he would bend down to kiss the ground. I don't know when he started to lose all that and turn into an extreme conservative, but he was basically a zombie for the last 10-15 years of his life, and I don't think that glamour (if you could call it that) will ever come back; we are all too cynical. In case anyone is interested, I would recommend a novel called Earthly Powers by Anthony Burgess, where one of the characters is a priest who eventually "makes Pope", as he puts it. Burgess was a lapsed Catholic, and he has some really interesting insights. It's also obscenely funny, so I don't want to make it sound like some sort of dry tract.
