Max Weber etc had some interesting ideas about churches here being a sort of primitive way of credit history, credibility, etc. Likely a better one? Maybe. But harder to work in a "global society" and could be exploited. But local community, usually, (at least until NSA) knows people better than other agencies. Much of the Jew and Muslim stuff also had good reasons for it (due to conditions of animal husbandry and technology, an "abundance of caution") but the new covenant etc and various reformations (in various religions) are more pertinent now. Now the problem is the one that DOESN'T reform and we support the most virulent part by buying hydrocarbons.
