I can`t even believe there`s actually a market for this type of thing.

Ya, humans suck.

This proves one of two things:

God doesn't exist.

God hates lions.

Far be it for me to speak for the Big Fella upstairs, but I`ll take a guess and say, he`s sittin` this one out. free will, and what-not.

Sounds like Cecil wasn't included in the discussion.

Theodicy - with the emphasis on idiocy.

This guy is a pig of a human with obvious masculinity and security issues.

When I saw he had once been involved in a sexual harassment payout it all made perfect sense.

What is it about dentists and big game hunting?

FTF- I don't want to start a religious debate, but I'm really sick of hearing "free will" as an excuse for non intervention by your deity. Yes, all the positive and negative effects are produced by people, but too many use religion as an excuse for their toxic behaviour.

If we need to have deities- I would prefer the Greek gods and goddesses. They reflected man's flaws and were capable of human feelings. The Greeks had a friendlier relationship with their gods/goddesses and they had a strong relationship with nature. They punished unacceptable behaviour such as indulgent pride, extreme ambition, and even excessive prosperity. The Greeks themselves held high standards apart from religious beliefs. Hubris was especially offensive and could result in the death penalty depending on the severity of the offence.

Maybe monotheism was a really, really BAD idea.

Sorry to veer off the track. This needless destruction of that beautiful lion should be punished. It's up to those countries to strictly enforce the protection of their animals. Airlines are refusing to carry animal trophies, and these cowardly hunters need to be held accountable. This is what happens in a world that monetizes everything. This is what happens when hubris runs amok.

There's also a petition calling for this jerk to be extradited to Zimbabwe to face charges.

Let's hope this makes others think twice.

Thank you for a  terrific post.

I think one of the best bits about the Greek gods was that they were as mean and petty as the rest of us, but they just happened to be more powerful. Pretending that there was one totally perfect man and making us all feel guilty about killing him is not a particularly appealing idea for me.

Then I would suggest you put your little fingers in your ears and hum really loudly.

Seriously, it`s apparent that there are a few posters around the forum that, unfortunately, endeavor to make EVERY thread in which I post ALL about religion.  A religion in which they have no belief, yet are quite fond of ridiculing. Frankly, I honestly could not possibly  care any less, but I suspect some folks do grow a little weary of it. For that, I apologize.

I recon he's been "out" for a long long time, and that Human nature is the scariest fact that we (and all other creatures within our reach) have to fear and resign ourselves to, for whatever piece of eternity that remains to us.  i.e. a never-ending threat, ever-present, never to be "grown out of", and each new generation means starting over again from scratch with the same certainty of outcome. Lucky to break even, a true miracle to sustain, to survive our own kind, to be Saved from ourselves. I have to agree with Art and Mitchiu Kacku, it's a fat chance we'll make it -- but worse, we'll take the whole thing down with us, depriving all of the other creatures having equal birth-right claims to this, their home.  It, Earth, belongs to them. We don't have the right. We so suck.

It's a running gag, that's all. At least as far as I am concerned. You can believe what you like, I won't try and convince you otherwise. All I ask is that you and your buddies give me the same courtesy. I think turning a discussion about a dead lion into a theological controversy is pretty impressive though.

I am not a violent person but if I saw Walter Palmer in a store I might be inspired to act violently.

He paid two schmoes $55K to look the other way and lure a protected animal from its safe zone while he shot it. Then tracked it for 40 hours as it suffered in agony, shot the lion again, decapitated it, skinned it, posed with it and claimed the "take" for his personal safari records online. It's tantamount to beating up a kid in a wheelchair and saying the victory was fiercely contested.

The 4chan and Anonymous folks have promised to have fun with this guy, as only they can, so get your popcorn ready. The Yelp hijinks are only the start.

It reminds me of short story by Saki called Mrs Packletide's tiger, which involved a woman trying to shoot big game. In the end she found one that was so old that the sound of the gun meant it died of a heart attack. It's worth remembering that this is a fairly recent view about animals. Early this century people wouldn't think twice about bagging a lion. It was just something you did and stuck over your fireplace.

I hope this guy's business is deader than Cecil. Financial ruin hopefully getting him to turn the gun on himself rather than "game".

Yep, saw all of it and followed since yesterday morning. Seeing it unfold throughout the day (especially on Twitter) was overwhelming as it grew.  I saw the Anon tweets as well. More info flooding out still. Shrines in front of his dental office, a fake Twitter account for his dental office posting absurd tweets.

It's so extremely heartbreaking and complex. Spoke with friends on all aspects of this, including those who are involved with big cat rescue, rehabilitation.  I believe there are now 3 petitions.

On the God / Goddess... She was on my mind all day. Sekhmet.

It is awful! Privileged white americans, with so much money they don't know what to do with it, pay off African land owners at which point they are given permission to kill majestic creatures at will. (not just Cecil, but other lions, giraffes, etc) It's disgusting. To be fair, privileged whites from other countries do it too., but it's predominately Americans.
They claim it's a form of "conservation"., if trophy hunting is allowed in a limited amount, it gives Africans incentive to preserve the animals, and save them for said white westerners. I call bullshit on so many levels., but then again, I'm a bleeding heart, hard core animal rights activist. There are three sides to every argument, but this is one no one but the animal and the activist will win in my eyes.

If I lived near this asshole dentist, I would organize a protest right in the front of his practice.

Make no mistake Meatie Pie, beautiful (on the outside) blonde (and brunette) women are on this team of "trophy killers" too. Not just men with masculinity and security issues.
How Kendall Jones, and many others, can sit there and smile next to a dead ENDANGERED animal is beyond anything I can comprehend. These people are proud to kill these animals, in fact they travel across the world to kill them. Lions are notorious for laying low during the heat of the day (assuming their bellies are full), they just lounge in the shade with their prides. Trophy hunters basically sneak up on and shoot animals that are sleeping, or lure them out of the shade to kill them.
Let me say too, people do this same sort of trophy hunting with sharks, and other sea life that is in serious danger of becoming extinct.

onan

It's a shame this guy is getting the anger for this, not that it isn't deserved. But trophy hunting, especially in third world countries is bringing some animals to extinction. This dentist is far from the only jerkoff that needs to travel thousands of miles and spend thousand of dollars to kill something because he can afford it.

That's true Onan. But, for some reason he chose Cecil to "accidentally" kill. Therefore, he got the attention.  He has broken the law, he will be extradited back to Africa and put on trial, he and the land owner that gave him permission to kill.
