Someone asked me about "Balls to the Wall" It actually came into use during WWII. The bombers job was to fly high, get in drop their bombs and get the heck out fast before they could be targeted. The briefer would give them their missions and before closing would say "Balls to the Walls boys!" The "balls" were the heads of the throttles on the aircraft. pushing them "to the wall" meant moving them forward as far as they could go giving them their fastest speed. Sorta like "gun it" So, Balls to the Wall boys meant get the hell out of there as fast as you can!

100 % agree.  The sixties, seventies and even  most of the 80s aren't supposed to be "my" music. Luckily I have had some great musical mentors who have and continue to introduce me to the best music. I imagine a lot of it is the level of commercialism has been a game changer. Of course there is current good music

Agreed. Its tricky to find the real gold now. Back in the 60s through the 80s era you could just turn on the radio and be treated to greatness in general (yes, there are some from this era that are duds). I guess I am having fun digging up from the back catalogs obscurities that may have hit at #22, for example and still have value. I have had many friendly debates with a 23 year-old conservatory trained friend in Canada about what is different now. Is it the melody lines, chords, the hooks ? (or lack of) and we just end up going in circles. He teases that all the old songs used the same chords and sound like they all belong in a silly movie as if they are all "quaint." I point out the lack of hooks and "oomph" and raw aggresion in the new songs - there seems to be a lack of sharp tension and release and call and answer between the various instruments. The keyboards when they are used now either use sawtooth or are just meandering in padding and not really following the vocal lines. There is a marked philosophical difference, and we have yet to pin it down.

It seems like you hit it in a general sense, but there are many hidden subtle reasons. My ears can hear autotune the first second it is used. There also is a style of commercial music that seems to be a fakey organic acoustic kind of thing where the instruments are whistling, clapping and maybe a xylophone...I wait for a nice guitar riff to set the song sailing and it never happens. When we are lucky a light banjo jangly sound sets in.

Dyna* (Dyna prime, which is the cat) told me herself that the newer music has the orchestration on a similar volume vis a vis the singer, and thus the words recede in importance as they sound more and more garbled. I depend on the words, like poetry, and so it might not be your imagination that older songs got their message across much clearer. As in Dancing in the Streets with Little Eva, for example.

Well it also doesn't hurt that most of today's popular music sucks big time.  I suppose someone will call me an old fart for saying it.  The music of my generation was New Wave/Punk and the Britpop that came out in the 80's.  I also love all rock and roll music going back to the 40's when it first started coming together.   I even like pre-rock styles like swing, R & B, blues and all of that.

No one seems to be able to write melodies anymore.  New songs borrow heavily from older songs and current songs.  Its just all rather innocuous.  Every once in a while a good tune may surface but that is far more rare these days.  It seems like in the old days there was a unique hook and groove to most songs that came out.
