It was really only after they did DISCOvery, that they lost there street-cred among us stoners. Before that, they were definitely a go-to source for buzz-friendly music.

That is true.  My bro was a big fan of ELO up until Discovery and liked a few songs off of that album but pretty much dismissed their work after that album.  However, I did like the music after that though I missed the strings.  Time was a very strong album and a completely different kind of album and many had a problem with it.  Me, I love 50's rock and roll so I enjoyed songs like Hold on Tight and Rock n Roll is King but their music in the 80's was very rooted in that periods synth-pop.
