The Other Side of Midnight - Richard C. Hoagland - Live Chat Thread

Wow, lots happened since I posted to this thread.  I'm a bit late to the party, but I just posted this to the Art Bell thread since Art had posted there about RCH: Those of us who have been watching how RCH acts during interviews, giving talks, on his website, on Facebook, and elsewhere over the past few decades were generally not surprised that this has happened.  I think frankly, many of us are surprised that it took this long.  I, personally, expected it to collapse within 2 months.

The ego that he has would simply not allow the show to live up to what its potential could be, could not tolerate any dissension from critics without ranting about them, nor could it not come up with excuses that still fit within his "model" when called out for something.

What has happened, I think, has been fascinating to watch.  And I don't just mean that I was as surprised as many others that RCH could really do an entertaining and interesting interview when he switched over from crazy mode.  What I'm talking about instead is the evolution of people who have been involved with helping him and trying to guide him, going from "This could be great, let's give him a chance," to "OMFG WTF is he doing?!"  (paraphrased, of course)

People genuinely wanted to support and help him (Art, Ross, I assume Keith) and did so very well.  People here - even some of his major critics (including myself, though I'm not sure how "major" I am relative to others) - were amazed at some of the engaging shows.  But, the ego and the crazy was there, lurking, and I think everyone at least here (including Art, Ross) realize now who RCH really is.

For me, it was always about the science and his promotion of pseudoscience, pseudoinvestigation, horrible warping of reality and facts (and outright lying) to fit things into his "models," and of course the constant appeal to his "dear friends" as if that lent credibility.

For others, it was good vs bad radio, and the interpersonal (behind-the-scenes) interactions, and what never ever to do as a radio host, which he broke last week: Lying (or at best, misleading) your audience, and then blaming them and saying you don't want listeners.

While I honestly never wish ill on individuals, I do hope that this is one of the mounting straws that will eventually remove Richard from being a radio show host, removing his outlet from which he can further spread his nonsense.

I guess I need to say something about the email and messages I have been getting about RCH. I did everything I could to help him in every way possible, including getting a loan of expensive gear from Telos to transmit his show to the Network. I found Rossy for him. I gave him the best advice I could muster up on how to proceed. I provided help in more ways then I will try to detail here.

I am sad that events have unfolded as they have. I am not going to discuss specifics but will say that we are currently not in communication nor have we been for some time now. Sometimes you think you know somebody and then find out you never really did, just sad. Please understand that I do not run the Network, I just do my show.

Ok, I will be the Devil's Adovate here. For me it good versus bad radio. I'm, likely one of the banned ones for many, due to politics, but to me Art, or anyone, it is, about the product. The conversation, the content, the art, the ideas. Caveat Emptor. Nobody, I hope, bought, RCH stuff but he had some good times over the years with his stuff with Art etc. We all knew this. And with this show? A surprisingly engaging host for many weeks. It appears that he treated staff badly

I am not taking any "side" but I think you have one of the most intelligent posts in this thread.  RCH wants a show that is stimulating and perhaps with unexpected content.  If you look at the "Best" show from a human interest perspective, it does provide a wealth of "lessons learned".  It wasn't the most exciting, nor the most memorable, but all shows can't be about Data heads on the Moon.

I think we should remember that RCH is trying to make 'us' happy.  He reads the stuff written here in BellGab.  He's not perfect, and his decisions may not always make sense to everyone.  That describes me as well, and perhaps the majority of posters here on BellGab.  While we have it, let's enjoy the interesting alternatives that Art and Richard provide us every week.

Fuck dick.

He has permanently lost this "useless eater" of bandwidth. Falkie can have my share. RCH and Falkie deserve each other.

You canceled your sub?

The context of his "useless eater" comment was a reference to listeners who are asleep, but still connected to the live show.  If I ran a show with variable expenses I think I would be concerned about the cost of bandwidth used to entertain sleeping listeners too. :)

Hmmmm.  Yeah.  I might just listen until I fall asleep.  Usually I turn off the stream.  But Dick does drone on at times, enough to put me and keep me asleep.
Better than melatonin.

Not so much. You could be lacking context. Not much arbitrary hatin' going on here.

File's a little bit big, isn't it? F'ing Comcast is metering our bandwidth use in this market now. Even with the video I stream I'm OK, but a 65GB file might do me in. I suppose I could d/l this file at the public library and suck up their bandwidth. Next time I'm near there I'll have to run a speed test and see how feasible that is.

The other thing one can do is listen to "The Very Best of Art Bell" on TuneIn. I do that on weekend nights well.
I have the 62 gig file, if you lived close to me i would let ya have it on a thumb drive, i seeded that thing forever and gave up.
at this point it would take forever to D/L the archive

That brings up an interesting point:  how the hell can he tell whether a listener is asleep?  Keith runs programming after him, so it's not like anybody still on at 2:05 AM Pacific is asleep.
I'll fall asleep somewhere btwn 1215 and 1230, I reckon, listening to the dulcet intonations of dick.

He had Keith run another set of "experiments" by disconnecting the active streams. Computers would not reconnect. Smatphones and tablets using the TuneIn app would automatically reconnect. Smart phone users using the pop up player would probably not reconnect.

Poor business practice if you ask me. If you want the traffic that follows Art's show, then you shouldn't bitch aboutvthe traffic that follows Art's show. It should just be a cost of doing business, factored into the business model.

Thanks.  I'll be sure to use Tune-In.  With my sleep disorder, I need all the help I can get.  Thanks dick!

Okay, y'all. Here's a true except of the program we've been discussing edited only to eliminate unrelated preceding and following program. There are no edits intra-clip.

I believe this is Fair Use.
Seems fair to me.

You live in Key West. Nobody lives close to you!

I have some pre-paid tickets for the Coral Castle and if I can ever manage to get there I was going to take to dogs along and on an outing to the hammock in Key Largo. If I make it that far I will let you know. I've sworn off driving to Key West. Haven't done it for years. The only way I'll go to KW now is on a cruise. I have nothing on tap in that department at the current time or foreseeable future. Too bad, actually. That could be a fun meetup.

I suspect the Hammock in Key Largo is far more treacherous than the shed.

This is also Florida. I travel with dogs and "heavy" if you catch my drift.

So I've heard. Actually that's pretty common for denizens of Key West. They're a little different there and some are a lot different. Talk about high strangeness...

Angry, outraged listeners are still listeners.

I KNOW, Right?  I have never been able to understand why I sometimes see people with podcasts, and/or live shows call them "Trolls".  Another thing I see often is "If you don't like it, don't listen".  I have even observed people having moderators in chats to send their outraged listeners away.

...And while I'm on a roll, stop screwing with the stream to disconnect people's devices.   ...
...

...Time to get straight, Dick!

I wasn't going to bring that up because Dick has completely sunk his own ship, but now that it's in the open I wonder if that was Snotty MMMMMMMMMM-Kay's doing.
Not the first time it's happened either, but Friday night was especially bad. Perhaps Dicky-boy didn't want peeps to hear the sick tawdry exchanges between him and the guest, or wanted the I.P addresses of the devices reconnecting.  :o
Good luck w/ that Dick.

Can you guys/gals imagine this scenario:
Dick forces devices to reconnect, Logs the I.P addresses, does a little research and sends out a bill to the owner of the devices that reconnect during his show. He's arrogant enough to try a scam like this but he'd need someone smarter than himself to pull it off- LOL
