Yeah totally man, I always thought the same about SETI. Why would an advanced civilization be broadcast on a 20th century medium? It makes not a lot of sense. Although Steven Grier's story tonight about SETI finding a massive signal tonight on MITD tonight was interesting.

Radio broadcasting with any power seems to be something a civilization does for a very short period during technological development. About 150 years, if our civilization is any indicator. It's just a short window before laser takes over and god knows what past that. So we're looking for civilizations that are exactly at the state we were 40 years ago that send out massive signals which we only did once, yet we expect the aliens to repeat their signals ad nauseum as we scan the skies to satisfy SETI.

SETI may well have found a massive signal though, I won't dispute that. They've found three anomalous signals, most famously the WOW signal. But they want a repeat to prove it, and well, our Arecibo signal did not repeat. So why would an alien signal repeat?
