The reviews of the Next Gen movies are great. The writer really loves Trek and makes fair and intelligent points about something he found to be a let down via a character. Check out the Phantom Menace review above all else though.

They have been obsolete for a while. We've had better tools than a bunch of pens.

Man, that is all really fascinating.

One of my favorite stories along those lines was an episode of the old TV show Pete & Pete. In the show aliens had discovered earth through TV signals so an alien kid showed up in this little town who was obsessed with Johnny Unitas and I Love Lucy because those television signals had just reached his planet.

I don't think contact will be question, the only question now is how and when.

The funny thing is that radio signals get really spread out and weak the further you go, so much so that a society on our level orbiting Alpha Centauri would not see us. You would need ridiculously sensitive equipment to detect our radio or TV signals past about 2.5 light years out. That makes SETI rather unrealistic. They hope for MASSIVE signals sent out by MAJOR Type II or III societies intended for someone to pick up. Well, how often do we send out massive signals intended for people pick up? We only did it once at Arecibo, and didn't repeat it. Yet that's the basis of SETI, look for a repeating signal. They won't find it.

Advanced alien life will be found with a spectrograph and probably sooner rather than later. If you want a good taste of this, check out Garik Israelian's TED talk, it's freely available on the net or Netflix.

Yeah totally man, I always thought the same about SETI. Why would an advanced civilization be broadcast on a 20th century medium? It makes not a lot of sense. Although Steven Grier's story tonight about SETI finding a massive signal tonight on MITD tonight was interesting.

It would. To produce energy, heat will always be emitted. If cold fusion were true, it would still feed energy out which would emit heat. There's just no way to produce energy without producing heat. Look at the sun, it's producing massive amounts of fusion energy and as result tons and tons of heat.
