Donald Trump was in Everett, just north of me, on Tuesday.  This barely made an impression on my conscious mind, but my subconscious was paying attention and, thanks to another surfeit of chicken before bedtime, this emerged in an interesting way.

I dreamed my dad had organized the event so I had to be there.  Most of it was helping with planning and logistics.  I spent the speech part smoking in the attached parking garage.  Strangely, I was smoking one of those long wood-stemmed porcelain-bowled pipes you see in old pictures associated with Germany and Eastern Europe.  On the way out, Trump caught sight of me and wanted me to help him smoke a pipe.  While he was off talking to reporters, I carefully cleaned and packed another giant pipe, worried about the general funk and residual flavor of the tobacco (it's like sweat; you can't smell your own, but sure notice other people's), and screwed all the pieces together, to spend a contented two minutes or so smoking with the Donald, who seemed like a decent fellow in person.

I can't use the usual method to analyze the dream (How did you feel?  Can you correlate this to anything in real life?) as I distinctly remember feeling completely blasé about the whole thing.  But, at the very least, can we not detect an unacknowledged ambition to be near the centers of power, to rub shoulders with the great?

And also confirmation that the pipe is a potent totemic symbol for me -- since I was a kid I have wanted to be the kind of man who smokes one but, were you to ask what kind of man that is, I'd have a hard time articulating it.
