It's because California is awesome and they realized it once they experienced how awful Texas is. Austin is proof of California's superiority*.

Im sure you been but Big Bend area is awesome. Had a ill-fated land deal there but still love it. Tho beconing more popular (like every good place with rich buying up.) But the stars and no comms was so neat. And, really, you get lost...your lost. You have to plan and every plant hurts (you and tires) but also can be useful.
