To me the important part is the cop's story. Today they'd be telling the same tale but including the part where they actually did what they were threatening.

I liked the idea that the Tim Roth character had so convinced himself of the story that he could actually go into it and experience all the details.  Interesting perspective trick there for the viewer to follow along.
