I live in the South and have never ever heard a Southerner talk with such a broad accent. The film takes place in Georgia and he definitely does not talk like a Georgia native. The GA accent is more gentle and refined. I don't have the accent myself. My voice is mostly a hodgepodge of West, North and South with maybe a very slight Southern lilt but nothing very noticeable. None of my Tennessee relatives talk like that and they have lived in the rural South for most of their lives. Their accent is more like Elvis's.

Do you think maybe you're overthinking it? I'm a Pittsburgh guy that married a Virginia woman (unfortunately) and her people kind of sounded like him. Then again...I sure had my own drawl. Not for me to judge.
