Those 'scratches' are on the emulsion on the film. So either the film got scratched while being developed, which is entirely possible, or it was photographed as is.

I'm sure I know far more than he does in image and film, so yes, it does seem like he is talking down to me. Maybe I am putting too much into what he says.

Hoagie does assume an air that he's clued in and those who don't get it are either unrefined in their thinking or snowed by the establishment, etc.  But to Rossy's point, he also seems quite personable at times.  It's all part of the Hoagie enigma.
