Started as a tour guide at a kid's planetarium, then was the director of a tourist trap science center. He has no formal educational background that I'm aware. I got curious and dug into his past one night. Can't find any evidence he ever went to college or anything.

"Allegedly" a scam involving a car from New York.  I'm pretty sure that story is bullshit but that's what I read on one of the conspiracy sites.  I mean, if Hoagie had done time we would know about it by now, you know?

According to Hoagland, he was hanging around at CBS in the studio audience or something during the lead up to the Apollo news coverage, and he pointed out they had hung their cardboard Moon upside down.  He was then asked to be one of their advisors.
