The bizarre thing is that a completely uneducated guy like Hoagie managed to worm his way into knowing giants like Bradbury, Sagan and Cronkite.  There's something 'Travis Bickle'-ish about the young Hoagster.

I don't really know anything about Hoagie's education. I doubt he's "completely uneducated" though. He obviously had enough scientific understanding to be able to hang with those people and swing in their jungle. I'm not saying he's a genius too but he obviously has some native intelligence. He never had to use a gun with any of them.

He has the gift of gab and a lot more than just a bit of the blarney, which can take you a long way in life. Hoagie's fatal flaw is forgetting who and what he really is which turns people against him and costs him any success and progress he makes. I agree he's intelligent, especially verbally.

There's something called 'the imposter syndrome'. Most people, even those of great accomplishment, when in the company of other great people will admit they don't feel worthy, they feel like frauds. The example I remember is Neil Armstrong the first human to step on the moon who was at some function in Washington where the rich and famous from all walks of life were present.  Armstrong confessed to somebody he was talking to there 'I don't know why they invited me, I'm just a guy who flies things.'  And then there's Hoagie, who literally is an imposter, but unlike Armstrong you could put Hoagland in a room full of Nobel laureates and he'd feel he belonged. If half of Hoagland's scientific theories were correct he would have a Nobel prize or two. That's how nuts he is, he believes his 'research' findings into things like  'torsion field/hyperdimensonal physics' and ancient Martian and Moon civilizations is valid science.

He can certainly be egocentric, misguided...sometimes even silly but I don't really think he actually thinks of himself as a scientist, just someone who also likes science and who is perhaps intelligent enough to talk to them on their level. He may even think that because of that he might have some sway and influence on the scientific world and that's where he sometimes ventures into some delusional thinking. However, I've heard him admit several times that what he does on air is pure speculation for entertainment. To me that indicates that he's self-aware enough to not be considered crazy.

I go back and forth in my opinion on Hoagie, I think it's possible he slips in and out of self-awareness. He's Schrodinger's Hoagie maybe,  two different states - the playful entertainer and the delusional nutcase superposed.

Ooops! I stand corrected and have to admit to having never read any of Hoagie's books. I probably should just for shits and giggles. Alright, so the guy is a little crazy. I guess that's why we all love his show. He's our modern day Don Quixote. Who else will battle the windmills for us?!
