ultimately there wasn't much background info on Sulu in TOS so i guess anything was possible ..i don't care either way but maybe they shoulda instead of just giving a nod to GT..i dunno..maybe contacted and talked to him about it

The article i read says that they did and he told them no but they did it anyway, they also mention how he has a daughter in the tos movies
