During the Permian Age 250 million years ago just about everything died due to an Extinction Level Event. A galactic year equals 250 million years and we are closer to the galactic center then ever before. Moreover our solar system is in the same position it was during the Permian Age.  What are your thoughts?

I'm just wondering if you have a reference to say that we are closer to the galactic center than ever before (sorry, didn't watch the video).  I'm sure we are in an elliptical orbit, but it has not been defined very well since we have such a small range of data points.  Even if we are at the near point, we have been in a more-or-less stable orbit for about 20 orbits; a 'near' pass should happen twice each cycle (so about every 110 to 125 million years), and any influence that could have would build and then dissipate over a period of tens of millions of years.  I'm not sure how it would matter anyway.  The most dangerous thing about being close to the center of the galaxy is the higher concentration of stars, meaning that there is a somewhat greater chance to get caught up in the radiation field of a supernova explosion or a cosmic ray burst event.  In any event, our orbit is probably nearly circular so we would be more influenced by our changing proximity to the local spiral arm than by our distance to the galactic center.
