Like I said, if you're a singer or comedian on stage who's always going to have that thing pointed at your mouth the 57 and 58 are great mics. Considered industry workhorses even. However, if you're sitting in a chair, moving around, working a board and taking calls they're not practical. The mics get more expensive when you move it into the studio but there are some good, cheaper USB alternatives these days.

Keeping it USB: I've watched some Youtube vids where the guy was using one of those Blue snowball mics and it sounded good to me. I think they're pretty cheap too.
