Shafica Karagull

Sorry if this has already been covered in previous posts, but I have a couple of questions.

George claims Shafica Karagull as an aunt. I found some interesting information about her and her career, but not much about family history. I checked out George's Wiki page but she's not mentioned there in his family/personal life sections. Plus the parents are not named- isn't that strange? Why wouldn't he provide information about his family- especially if he had an accomplished relative? Maybe I'm missing something- but I remember him talking about her on the show.

I found some snippets about SK here:

http://www.biomindsuperpowers.com/Pages/RealStoryCh40.html

<snip>
SHAFICA KARAGULLA was born in 1914 in Turkey, educated at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, and took her residency at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for Mental and Nervous Disorders in Scotland.
In 1952, her research into hallucinations in abnormal mental states brought her to Dr. Wilder Penfield at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
She became an American citizen in 1957, and was on the faculty of the State University of New York's Department of Psychiatry. At that time she read about the famous sleeping clairvoyant, Edgar Cayce, and concluded that he "did not fit into any of the categories of the insane or the neurotic or even the sane. Edgar Cayce shattered my theories about the nature of man's mind."

and

The year of her birth in 1914 saw Turkey and the Middle East in terrible upheavals, and which lasted for twenty years, and which until today have left many hatreds open and active.
Religious and political sects tried to exterminate each other, and as a young girl, Shafia saw her parents and most of her relatives herded into a church which was then burnt to the ground with the alive inside screaming in agony. Only she, and I believe a brother, escaped this abysmal genocide.
She was born with a foot deformity that made her undesirable for marriage. She had been captured, tortured, beaten and tossed in a tub of water in an effort to try to drown her -- an activity that left her with occasional lung problems.

I think George probably has to have someone scrub his Wiki entry on a regular basis.

George used to ask various guests if they were familiar with his 'aunt', perhaps he still does.  One time a guest said that not only did he know of her work, he had known her personally.  George was delighted, and they began to have a conversation about her.

The fun part was that the guest told George she pronounced her last name differently than the way George was pronouncing it, and George didn't acknowledge his comment.  Being quite the dope, for the rest of the segment George would pronounce her Cuh-RIG-you-luh, and the guest would reply and pronounce it Care-uh-GOO-luh.  Good times.

Thanks, PB. That must have been a riot. She did run in some impressive circles- no mention of relatives though. I am not a regular listener to the show these days, but it's been awhile since I've heard him mention her. There's not much about her family and I assume that's due to her tragic early years. It would be interesting to see the family lineage.  ;)

The chapters mentioned above were from Ingo Swann's book- Remote Viewing The Real Story.

I believe there was a nefarious manchurian-candidate type work that was done by Penfield and McGill Univ in the 50's.  But let me plead a faulty memory and forgive me if not so.  And it might explain ignoory's strangeness.  He's a sleeper.

You could be right, Maureen. LOL His mission is to dumb us down and cause mental exhaustion.

Little Hater

Somewhere here at Bellgab, there's a thread in which someone provides information that she was Noory's father's cousin, but he called her 'Aunt'.

bigchucka

Searching uncovered a very similar thread to this one, but didn't see where their exact relation was covered.  Then again, I was just doing a quick glance using the search feature...

Thank you for the additional info- I'll see if there are any more bits to add. I'm thinking if there's a solid connection, he'd be hoisting that up on a flag and parading it around every chance he had.

Or they might just get merged together later on.  Guy that does that is probably still passed the fuck out after a night of horrible singing...

I think this is where he became obsessed with "psychic Vampires"- Karagulla's Breakthrough to Creativity. The site lists her as the "aunt" and says she died in a car accident. Unfortunately they offer no real source for this information. I wonder if it's possible to find an obit on line.

Found this forum talking about her and Swann and the CIA, Dames, etc. You've got to scroll through a bit- it's funny reading actually. Their source says it was murder! A toaster thrown in the tub.  :o

Yes, there was at McGill under Donald Ewen Cameron for the CIA. Interestingly he was also, at various times, President of the Canadian, American and World Psychiatric Associations, the American Psychopathological Association and the Society of Biological Psychiatry. Even though his "psychic driving" and other experiments (LSD, sensory deprivation, drug induced comas, repetition of white noise or taped loops of statements or music), were awful and unethical.

There is precious little online about her personal life and relatives/family. Has anyone asked him outright about his family tree? Not that this is a big deal- I just get annoyed by name droppers. It should be easy enough (considering that Ancestry.com advertised on the show) to just mention how she ties into the family- I'm assuming from the paternal side. Considering her cred in the "spooky sciences" you'd think he's do a show about it.

No point digging any further. I used to do research on properties with some interesting family histories- just so you know I'm not an obsessive weirdo. Just a run of the mill weirdo.  ;D

I did find this (rare interview) from Joseph Millard- you may have to tape some paper over half the screen, but you can hear her talk about her work.  ;D

Hmmmm.  I'm perplexed.  Most of the time, when reading a phrase like that, I just look at who is posting and the decision to click(or not) on the link is made.   ::)  I like your jokes and your posts.  But....
Should I or shouldn't I??   ;)

Hahahahaha.

;D  Scroll down, scroll down.

Actually, pretty interesting.   :)

I'm glad I can share a laugh with you.  :) If you don't mind GN's mug on the screen- go for it. They also have this video on Youtube but the comments section is closed- I wonder why.  ::)

Thanks, Albrecht!!
Alzheimer's doesn't stand a chance when one has intelligent friends around!! ;) :D

Look, if Jorch says he has an ant, then he has an ant.

George mentioned his aunt, fairly briefly, on last night's show Sept-07, 2013. He basically just said that she was a great and died before her work was finished.

Thanks- I missed that. A great aunt would mean she was his father's aunt. Since the only mention of her family I found was of a brother who may have also survived with her in Turkey. His grandfather's sister? He's so vague about his personal life and family. It's his prerogative, of course. I just remember him mentioning her for a spell a few years back and had expected him to include segments about her work in his radio or "tv" show. Then he seemed to mention her less. There is so little in her bio and I believe he had her friend, Ingo Swann, on his show. I don't remember it or if they had talked about her. I did post a link to a rare, partial clip of an audio interview. Whoever posted that clip has George's face along side Karagulla's pic. So strange. I'm not saying George put them up to it- he may not be aware of it.   ;D

I looked at an old census from 1940.  George's mother is American according to him, but grandpa and grandma Noory were originally from Turkey, which is also Shafica's birthplace.  They migrated to Egypt where George's father was born, and finally to America.  It appears that George's grandfather (also named George Noory) and his grandfather's brother both lived together with their wives, children, and a couple grandchildren in Detroit.

Shafica was not listed on that census, but appears to have been in Beirut pursuing her education at that time.  Nonetheless, one of the listed daughters (George's direct aunt) was born in Turkey a year before Shafica.   From this I deduce Shafica must have been a cousin of George's father as one of the posters mentioned, and was with a part of the family which remained in Turkey.  If that is true I believe that would make her a cousin, twice removed.  However I can't completely rule out that she's a real aunt who just stayed behind.  For example, that daughter Shafica's age appears to have come over later than the others after starting her own family in Syria, which is right next to Lebanon and therefore Beirut.  For all I know, Beirut may have even been part of Syria back then (so it would make sense they could have been sisters).  Unfortunately I wasn't able to look at more documents which would have given me a fuller picture.

In any case it doesn't look like she was as close as the rest of the family (not living together with them all in that one residence), so that may be the reason for George's vagueness.

I don't feel completely comfortable talking about George's family if he wants it to remain hidden, but this stuff is public record, and I probably didn't make much sense anyway.

Thanks for the additional info- it certainly seems possible. I'm not trying to pry into his personal life. I respect privacy.  If he wants to keep it on the down low- then he probably should have mentioned her as a distant relative and left it at that. I can understand why he doesn't list family members given the negative attention he gets from his job. I'm not trying to make a big deal about it- just was a little curious. I found the info on Karagulla interesting. She certainly went far despite the tragedy of her early life. I only found a few excerpts from what was written about her personal life.

No problem.  I found it interesting too for whatever reason.  I edited my original post a little after thinking more about the possible link between Shafica and the aunt who was listed in the census.  It puts them both potentially in or around Beruit at the same time.

I thought this thread was going to be about high-scoring Scrabble words.
