It's especially fun once you know that both C. Crane and Sirius once got in some difficulty with the FCC for accidentally selling FM transmitters which were slightly too juicy.  Another reason why I admire Bell, an excellent broadcast engineer and ham operator...and former pirate (as am I.)

It's wonderful that there's some provision for unlicensed broadcasting (under 'Part 15' of the FCC rules), and the C. Crane unit is a very good one that works as advertised.  In the US, however, the actual FM radiated power allowed is almost impossibly low, something like 0.01  microwatts.  So low, in fact, that it's really difficult to accurately measure and adjust the devices during manufacture. 

The FCC really needs to open up additional opportunities for unlicensed, low power, hobby broadcasting in the US.  For instance, New Zealand allows 1/2 Watt FMs to operate unlicensed, and the place hasn't fallen into the ocean or subjected to lightning bolts from the Communication Gods due to this apparent radio impropriety.

Meantime, one must NEVER add 30" of wire to the antenna!  EVER!

What have I missed? I found tonight that I suffer from BTDS. Also known as "Bored As F%$# Syndrome", it's symptoms are involuntary lassitude and ultimately a suspension of consciousness. It is brought on by having been awake immediately prior for periods more than 18 hours, but also by more than 1 hour of listening to a puffed up arrogant fraud known as Richard Hoagland.

No shit, I dropped out on the original play at about 1 1/2 hrs in, woke about the same spot on the replay, and immediately went out again until now. I see I have missed.....not a damn thing.

Throughout this whole interview, my mental image of Hoagland has been an excited little dog running around Art's feet.

Hoagland is a man who knows how his bread is buttered, oh yes. It's really difficult not to laugh.

Love him or hate him, Richard "Can you see it now?" Hoagland is comedy gold!  I had the pleasure of meeting him back in the 90's.  He was wearing that natural leather vest with the arm tassels.   

I can listen to this guy for hours and not even pay attention to what he's saying...    It's definitely classic Art Bell, as the past few shows have been. 

I'm hoping next week will be a Mel's hole update, as well as a Bugs Samsquanch un-burial.

I think he's just used to getting his way with Noory.  Really, it's pretty funny.  He walks all over Noory, and Art will not let him do it.   He almost acts like a child, trying to please Art in any way possible, knowing that Art commands a lot of respect - like a father figure.   But when he's on Coast, he acts like he's responsible for the show's success, almost scolding Noory at times.   I liked how Art didn't want him to say "pissed" - but "damn" and "hell" were just fine. LOL

I think AB knows Richard is full of it. Even when listening to replays from way back when, I got the sense that Art was fed up with Richard.
