I'm guessing the shocker for some will be that Art is signing another non-compete.
Groan. I hope not. Then something will not be to his liking, and it'll be all in again.

I think most people on here know that Art has a history of melodrama, and the radio biz is so deep in his bones that he can't make the simplest announcement without teasing the hell out of it. The trouble is, if you keep on doing it then you end up alienating the people who are your biggest supporters. He might think we are all carping dicks, but the criticism is almost always with the intention to be constructive rather than insulting. My guess is that it will be something that compromises his initial intentions for the show, probably involving commercial radio, because he isn't used to playing in the minors and wants to be talked about again. That has obviously been the tendency of most of his remarks on here over the last few weeks.

There is simply no reason to drag out an announcement like this. If he wanted to notify people of something, and also give them a heads up, he doesn't need nearly so much lead time. This is simply about fucking with his fans and it isn't very impressive. His whole attitude to broadcasting has clearly been mixed, and I have always got the impression that he misses it when he isn't doing it, but finds the day-to-day business a bit tiresome after a while, and these reappearances become of shorter duration each time. I certainly hope it isn't 'bad' news, but, jeez, this is real drama queen stuff. Somebody should buy him a tiara.

Nah, he just knows how to create buzz. Look at Bellgab tonight, it's been on fire all night.

The trouble is, you can only do that a certain number of times before people figure out you're full of shit. At least for me, it's getting a bit old. Buzz is one thing, head games are another. Also, quite often people make a fuss out of something because they know that it is actually not all that significant and are just trying to create interest out of something that is basically uninteresting. This whole thing about it being a 'shock' for some sounds like that. But, it is a miserable day here and I am in a bad mood so what do I know?  ;)

What are you gonna do? Stop listening over it? There's a science to this promo stuff. Bad mood? Join us in the Hoagland thread, have you listened to him yet? He's surprisingly good and tonight/morning the panel looks really good. Hoagland talking with two Ph.D. Psychologists, a mental health expert and a pop culture expert about Marvel and project paperclip. That's got to be batshit crazy good.

No, if I stopped listening it would be due to the quality of the show rather than anything else. You're not the first person to see all this as a brilliant marketing wheeze, but really all he is doing is teasing his fans (who will listen anyway) and risk the chance of annoying the people who are most loyal. I would have thought a more sensible idea would be to keep his base happy while trying to broaden his appeal at the same time. I don't see Art as a brilliant publicity genius, as his idea for ambushing radio stations the other week demonstrated. He's been out of the game for a long time, and things move on. Don't assume he has all of the answers because he clearly doesn't.

As for RCH, I keep meaning to give the old boy a try, but I have a hard enough time keeping up with Art's shows without adding another one to the list. I ought to try though because it seems that he is putting out a good show, contrary to my expectations that it would be a total train wreck. He always seemed like too much of a blowhard but it looks like I was wrong. It happens occasionally.  ;)

Oh I wouldn't say brilliant, I agree. I wouldn't do it this way, there are more refined means in this day and age to promote something on the internet. But it is still effective in a big clunky hammer sort of way. It created buzz. That's all it needed to do.

He's surprising, he can suspend RCH and go into an interview mode do a nice job. Plus there is much humor, he even pokes fun at himself at times. Other times he goes completely RCH, as expected. It's varied, but good.

OK, you sold me! I've heard enough people talking about him to convince me that there must be something in it. Previously I have only ever thought of him as good with Art, and he tended to hog the airtime of everyone else. How much do you get from each sale? 10 percent? Surely 19.5! You'd better send in your invoice.

Just back to Art for a minute. I guess you're right, that he is doing what he can, and simply using old techniques that would have worked better in the old days. He's always had a reputation for being ahead of the curve, but basically he is an old-time radio guy who's as conservative as they come. I think his use of the internet back in the old days slightly obscure that fact for many people, who still see him as an innovator. I don't see him as mould-breaking - just better than anyone else at what he does.

My guess is that the announcement will be that he is going to grease himself up for some corporate dick, but if he is going to stay independent then he will have to take the advice of people who are aware of the market today. He probably has to settle for being a successful small-time operator in this area rather than the big beast he used to be. That is, if he is really serious, but he always seemed pretty ambivalent about the whole deal from the get-go.

Hoagy's show sounds great tonight, or this morning. I get confused too. Was away quite a lot recently so have weeks to catch up on, but what I like about it is it's so varied. Not as big a comic geek as I used to be but I still love them. Recently it seems to have gone from absolutely nothing to listen to not having enough hours in the day. While I am curious about Art's announcement he does seem to do this a lot.

Art "debunked" it on his show so we wouldn't all try to flood out at once and clog up the escape route  :P

He's old enough to be able to still use a map, or possibly even navigate with a compass and the position of the sun...So what did Art do to mess with people while I was asleep? It's almost 6:00 AM here. I see the last post was 4:00 AM.

A late thank you, Starr

If I was 20 years younger.................................  :o

Time for the Saturday post.
Tonight starting at 8PM Central until Midnight Central ( Thats 6 to 10pm Pacific for you guys in Rio Linda ) on http://ksyl.com is:  Art Bell: Somewhere in Time from June 14, 1996, when Art was joined by expert remote viewer Ed Dames who discusses remote viewing "Art's Parts" and why he believes it comes from a "time machine."
Ksyl has a live stream listed on their page and they can also be found on Tune-in.
If you are local to NW Louisiana or if the propagation is right, you can hear them on 970AM, I do not know if the show is in the archive. Jazmunda might have the info on that.

For those of you with a bent for nostalgia, from 6pm to 8pm Central, ksyl plays When Radio Was, with old radio shows from the time when "Radio was King!"

Remember "Theres Magic in the Static"

and now back to speculation.........

Only an hour and 12 minutes of this show exists in the archive so effectively this is new as when the mush mouth Noory stuff is edited out SIT is about 2 hours and 35 minutes.

Or he's on a Friday flight to Manilla.

If that was the deal, more commercials for time on some big stations, I'd understand that.  It would be like twisting the knife inside that other show's guts.

I'd kinda like to see that.

When was the last time you heard Art talk about Manilla?

That man IS Pahrump.   He's not going back to PI.  Manilla is the Anti-Pahrump.

No matter how much he asian nations, he's pretty happy in NV.

Art is given to melodrama, but his employing the word "hate" does make the announcement seem quite unlikely to involve show expansion.

Add the other words Art used that pop out: "shock" and "sorry". So now we have "shock, hate  & sorry". The sum of those words doesn't look very positive to me.

For this long time listener, I am so sick of Art's toying and jerking around his long time listeners. Melodrama is an understatement and Art playing his silly games again is starting to really make me angry.

I may be a bit too positive for this time of the morning but in my gut I think he means those words for the people that don't like Art or are in competition with him.  It's a thought anyway. Damn it's going to be a long weekend!

It's sound like your 'coffee' came from Colombia with extra marching powder this morning. I wish I could share your optimism. If that really was the case then Art is a total dick for stringing people along the way he has.
