OK, over stated my position, I am in agreement with you.  There IS merit and it is not on a par with quack ideas.  But it IS fundamentally still a belief, and may change over time with new information or ideas.
I think you are right. I have been a practicing scientist for 35 years and have seen one fad after another come and go. During the height of a particual fad, most people are on board with it, then something else newer  comes along... repeat...repeat...repeat. Some things stick, but not necessarily from real understanding, more from a standpoint of "it works, so keep on using it". From my perspective there is very little real understanding. THere is, however , a lot of technology.

I am NOT a scientist, I am philosopher, so that may explain a bit where I am coming from as well.

ALL science is Theory, not necessarily fact.  As new and better ideas come forth what is now considered fact will be replaced by new theories that will be considered facts.

Quote from: onan on July 23, 2015, 07:15:18 PM
This is intellectually dishonest.

Yes Science uses hypotheses and then theories. Those theories are tested by other scientists and over time those theories may well gain acceptability.

But your position is that all science is just theories and therefore has no more merit than a huckster.

Onan, thanks for posting in such an eloquent, succinct, diplomatic manner.

I rolled my eyes at such ignorance. Having a far less noble thought, as I scrolled to the next post.

Blessed be that you took the time attempting enlightenment, with such a gentle demeanor.

'ello there, mate!

Nice hearing from you 21st. Enjoying MITD? I surely am, 'cause I turn to stone when Art is gone.

Skunk Ape

Ya know, MV, I haven't read the last dozen or so pages, so I've no idea if anyone has said this already. Art freaking Bell congratulated you on the birth of your daughter live on his show... it just sank in for me how big of a deal it should be for you.

I mean it's almost as great as the birth itself.... Almost.

If you were a philosopher then you should know that philosophers are also scientists - but in the realm of reason and logic, not necessarily grounded in empirical research.

I'm a scientist...it is very, very hard work...you fail 99% of the time JUST to find that 1% of knowledge you can rely on! It takes a very special person to fail that often and keep going...when you find folks out there that diminish your work, it hurts...that's why some of the scientists behind fiber optics and night vision were upset with Col. Corso...they worked their lives on those projects...step by step, discovery by discovery over years and years...then to have this guy say, "We found it on a crashed UFO"...I don't blame them for being upset...

I am still fuzzy on the leap from vacuum tubes to transistors. Seems like a quantum leap in understanding to me.

One of the things I really like about getting old is the memories of my dad buying tubes for the TV at the local grocery store.

There was a place here in Dayton called Rankin and Hauser that still sold them up until the early 90's I think.  Now the only place some can be found locally is Mendelsons (outlet for industrial odds and ends, etc).

I remember my dad buying them and the old tube tester at the local drug store.

It was dishonest, ignorant, or stupid view of how science works.
Science isn't a belief system, nor does it rely on dogma. It's all in the data.
But a Scientist would know that...

I was telling my kids about it a few years ago when my son's 60 inch plasma went on the fritz. They just looked and nodded... those bastards are already planning my placement in an old folks hime.
