I think Vegas SHOULD get a team, it IS a world class city (though personally, I've been there but never gambled, not even a quarter of a dollar).  But still, it's football and ever since the CTE truth came out, I just don't see the game as I used to.  They are eating up players and spitting them out.  Not the only sport where this is a problem, of course, but if you read and watch stories about CTEs and see what happens to players, it will upset and anger you.  If we are paying these people to die young, we should be honest about that and come right out and acknowledge it.  Then we can come to terms with being no better than the Romans.

I think players know the risk. It's their decision to play for more money than most of us will ever see.

I am upset more by the silly rule system. The playoff lions/cowboys game was horribly officiated and not just the blown pass interference. The silly compesentary pick process is completely subjective and unfair. Catches, pass interference calls, and holding are all called with no consistency. If nothing is done to fix this more fans will turn away. I am also a huge NFL fan.

Don't listen to the idiots in sports media.  Jacksonville has a great fan base and no blackouts in six years - despite having a terrible team.

I agree completly, the Raiders seem perfect for Las Vegas. However the Fan's are a bit rough, when going to a Raider game you better be wearing Raider black or be sure the fan behind you is not playing with a knife, I know because I have been to a few Raider games. However their image would fit right in.

Art - I'm not sure what if any interest you have in the NHL, but it sounds like a hockey team in Vegas is basically a done deal for the 2016-17 season. http://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/hockey/lead-investor-nhl-team-buys-home-negotiates-office-space

It could still take a couple of years but according to Chris Mortenson and others they are finally getting close with the stadium and deals in LA.  We shall see.

They already have the land in LA, but it's kind of a bad location in Carson.  I've heard that it's an old dump, not sure if thats true.  The Chargers (owners/management) want to be in a bigger market, because it's always about the money.  San Diego will keep the Chargers only if the city can get a deal done with the Chargers in a relatively short time.  This has been coming to a head for years.  I just don't think the Chargers have a good fan base in LA, maybe I'm wrong.

Haha, I am not a Ice Hockey fan, I want a NFL team! Besides its hot as hell here in the Summer.

As far as the players are concerned at this point they know the risks and the benefits, big payday, big risk.

Las Vegas is not a Mob town anymore (sadly in some way, it was safer then) so this thing about betting is not relevant. Besides I have seen games I could swear we're thrown.

If l.a. Doesnt have one Las vegas isn't getting one. I think san antonio or Austin gets the next relocation. It is freaking exploding around here. 300 people move in to Austin PER DAY.

I'm from San Antonio and as much as I would love to have an NFL team here, there is one reason why it will never happen. That reason is Jerry Jones. He knows San Antonio is a Dallas Cowboys town. He will do everything in his power to keep SA from getting a team.

sydtron

Yeah. The interveiw with Merle Haggard you did. Was a good window into the OLD vegas.
Still cant beleive he got his $$$ stolen!
I was there a few years ago.  Its one big theme park now.  Not to say I didnt enjoy it. I was drunk as hell after breakfast! What a vacation! I felt a little like Keith Richards. Haha.

Me too.  And he made the show his own for the night when he hosted.  He did interviews that nobody else would have done.  Like the Dead Rock Stars show with author R Gary Patterson.  His book was "Hellhounds on Their Trail: Tales from the Rock N Roll Graveyard"
Add me to the list of Ian Punnett fans. Especially the R Gary Patterson interviews, like you've said. His book "Take a Walk on the Darkside" is still one of my favorite books about Rock myths and legends. He'd be an AWESOME guy to get on Art's new show. Heck, so would Ian.

Gavin Edwards would also be a cool rock trivia guest. He wrote "Is Tiny Dancer Really Elton's Little John" which is chock full of cool info.

As for the NFL in Vegas, give them the Jaguars or some other team that's not gonna make it. 32 teams is plenty for now.

Hey Art,

Any chance Sirius/Xm will pick up your show as an independent broadcaster?

I doubt it, we had some pretty serious disagreement, I do not hold any grudges, it just did not work out. I would be a good business move for them but they say they only want exclusive content even though they do in fact do that with other shows as you point out. Again I now know more about what went on during the period they were talking to "them" behind the scenes. I may at some time choose to talk about it. If you have enough money you can do about anything.

once the details are in place and it is time for the social media blitz, why not use a new avatar, advertising Art's return date, where, etc.  if used for FB, Twitter, Vine and so on, especially for those who are prolific posters, would be great exposure.  some users seem to have a great many friends/followers.   an assortment to choose from would be good, however, just one or two really outstanding ones could be shared by many.  so much talent for this on this forum....any takers?

Art,

What do you think of the possibility of the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders sharing a stadium in LA?...

The Raiders and Cal should have built a shared stadium, as should the 49ers and Stanford.

Now 3 of those teams have new very expensive stadiums, with the NFL team having 8 home games a year (plus pre-season and playoffs), and the college teams having 6 or 7.

Make them sign a non compete so that they can't have any competing paranormal broadcasting on when your show is on.

Art, have you ever checked out Leo Laporte's small streaming empire called TWiT (This Week in Tech)?  I am a loyal listener to Leo's dozen or so shows, I was a fan of him way back in the ZDTV days.  You and Leo should form an alliance!

Haha yeah, I can't fathom a hockey team being a big hit in Vegas but we'll see. Football or even basketball seem like much safer bets. I do agree about the players, though - it's up to them to be able to handle playing in Vegas, that shouldn't deter a league from putting a team there.

You're spot on...  Jerry would never let that happen, San Antonio is huge Cowboy fan country.

Again I have no fear of Coast at all there is plenty of room for both. I think we will draw VERY different groups of listener's. For that same reason they really should have no fear of me.

I just want a good show representing this topic which will give people a clear choice. Let me say again that the World has changed and all those smart devices can be thought of as portable Radio's, think about it, if I have a FREE Worldwide show we are on equal ground and that's all I ask.

I am hoping when blitz time comes that many will help out, the power of Social Media is the new fact of life. If you were to ask me which is more effective, a National Magazine or a Social Media blitz, there is no contest.

Vegas would be great to have an NFL franchise BUT supposedly the league doesn't want the gambling association.  Even though they know they benefit from gambling!  LA though looks like it WILL get 2 NFL teams.
Though there have been some scandals the problem with gambling and sports is not from the legal gambling areas but from organized crime. (Heck in Europe many of the soccer clubs have sponsors on their jersey of betting shop!) Actually with technology and many bets being placed online (or in legal betting shops) organizations/governments can help catch the gambling scheme and identify the problem. And also the information, being available, of where bets are going keeps the bets more "honest." One could even initiate some kind of parimutuel, betting exchange, etc in addition to fixed-odds (maybe.)

Where it really gets bad is when it is all sub-rosa and the people involved are organized crime syndicates and the problem of loan-sharking. And usually in those cases they are targeting a referee or player who has gotten himself into trouble by illegal gambling or has criminal connections etc.

Assuming you don't buy the grand conspiracy theory ("The Fix is In") and the games are a real, sporting contest between two teams who wish to win, I don't think legal gambling will effect it. I would still have rules against players gambling, referees, umpires, however.

Art Bell

No I am not a guy who sees conspiracy around every corner, I was kind of joking when I said I thought I had seen thrown games. It just feels that way sometimes when you favorite team loses at the last second, lol

I agree with the folks who think Ian P. made the show his own.  He did some really good interviews in my opinion and also had the challenge of some stinky awful guests.  Knapp and Punnett would be my choices as a distant second and third...then Wells.

Which is why you can see past the Alex Jones type nonsense--kudos to you.  Open to high strangeness but with feet firmly planted on the ground.

I've read somewhere that you don't care to do TV appearances that often.

Have you considered doing a Youtube video promoting your new show? I don't know if Youtube would allow such a thing.....maybe if you post some of your new shows on Youtube it would justify the promotion video?

If we can help spread the word on the new show it might help to have a link to a promotional video done by yourself telling people about the details of your new show. Just a thought.

Anthony Cumia made a promo on YouTube for his new show. But he does post little "Best Of" clips, so you may be onto something. Or he just posts them to get new subscribers.

Then again you could probably get Falkie to do a promo video for the show.  :)

I think we should discuss HOW we spread the word.

I was listening to a old show with leer as the guest. I completely forgot about a call in I made in the mid 90's as a 5th grader. I dialed my little heart out for 4 nights straight. I finally got through and panicked. I had this animal noise maker I used to use to annoy my brother with. I was to scared to talk when I heard east of the Rockies you are on the air. So I just pushed the monkey noise button.

Art was nice enough to say anything else? No, well I guess that's all he had to say.
Haha!  That is a cute!

Just a few famous ones but there are so many, especially when one gets in horse-racing and boxing:

Sh*t happens and will continue too. But there is a big difference than individual match-fixing, point shaving, etc and a "grand conspiracy" by the leagues themselves! I also would tend to agree with the idea that legal betting helps catch the scandals and identify culprits and also keep odds "honest" versus illegal betting and more involvement with organized crime syndicates, especially when associated with loan-sharking.

Art Bell

Well when the time is right, Websites, paranormal sites, blogs, overseas sites, anywhere we can put a promo message. Kind of like with what you all did with the XM site but a bit more spread out. Lol.

But if done to early it would be a waste because people have short memories. Then it's on me to keep them listening and I will do my best, since it's gonna be free and easy to get to it will build. I am sure we will get some free press as well. Starting small doesn't bother me a bit. I've got a total of about 17,000 people who watch my FB page as well.

Art, you should do a subreddit discussion when the time comes (ask me anything on Reddit).
