Any of the Malachi Martin shows. For whatever reason, those freaked the teenaged me out something fierce. I guess all the years spent in Catholic school. A close second would be the first Michio Kaku interview when he was still a nobody.

Yes, I agree.  He was the only guest who sold me books.

I think of the 80s as the death rattle of the music industry - it still had some life left in it into the 90s but the greed and corporatization had destroyed it by the end of the 90s.

So true.  Yet, counter-intuitive as money is not being made.  Love it or hate it, the 80s naturally provided a super well-spring of musical talent from a range of backgrounds and ages.  Now, it seems impossible to expect anything equivalent to the 80s in quantity and quality.  What we have now is an industry dominated by pre-programmed, screechy, adolescent, invariably blonde females with no talent whatsoever.  We are in to two decades without music.  "The day the music died" sadly rings true.  What a bizarre industrial and cultural failure.

I bought a few. I bought Martin's books, but also bought Whitley's Communion, Hoagie's Monuments, and I've read all of Kaku's books.

Back in Black is a solid piece of work, but when I'm in the mood for raw intensity I tend to gravitate to more provocative fare like Ministry or NIN:

I love Ministry.

All good music. Let's try to keep everyone happy and have some posts that relate to the thread title. I have a question because my memory fails me. When Art talked about time travel and was asked what event or time period he would most like to witness/visit, did he say the time of Christ? I'm pretty sure that Dave gave this answer but I'm not certain about that. Does anyone remember that show?

I remember him saying that too.  I have always wanted to tell him to set the timer at -2025 and he will just about hit it right to see the man at his prime.  That's what I did but I had trouble locating him because he and his disciples were moving around way too much.  I did manage to run into Mary Magdalene at the The Garden of Gethsemane.  Beautiful place, and what a beautiful woman!

I tried to score with her but no dice.  Jesus had successfully turned her away from her previous occupation and that's cool.  I'm afraid I came off as a bit of a devil, and freaked her out by talking about things that would be happening in the "future."

You're dead to the world if you haven't found amazing music in the past two decades.

There's plenty of newer stuff that's good.  Like all musical eras there is good and bad.

Music has become much more culturally fractured.

All the mainstream music is total shite, in my opinion, but there are always people making amazing music.

Maybe I'm too old, but I can't get into the new music; it seems to drain my energy. I'm happy listening to the 'old' stuff. I do find a new song that I like every now and then- but it's rare when that happens.

Haha- that was funny, Jesus. Meh- heard it all before. Here's a sweet one from Rammstein. I listened to them for awhile when running.

Edited to substitute less racy video. Our MV is a sensitive guy- we've got to watch over him- he's our little lamb.  ;D Seriously- this one has lyrics and translation.

John Mack's Abduction is good. It used to be available for a .25 on amazon's used marketplace. Now its $18 unfortunately.

Music has become much more culturally fractured.

Culturally fractured is a good way to put it. Niche-y might be another way. The same thing has happened to the TV industry. You do see some evidence of quality and real talent emerging, but the trend is that marketing caters to an increasing diverse and divided audience and these two drivers feed on each other. In this environment, it's hard to imagine another golden age for music like the 1960s and the British Invasion.

What a bizarre industrial and cultural failure.

I think it's best summed up by the youtube phenomena of the same 30 seconds of a track, on loop for 10 hours. Or the Blues Brothers playing Rawhide for 1 hour.

There is no need for musicianship when you can replicate garbage using a computer.

It can be fairly said technology aided every single human field except for music.

You gotta love that guitar work in Archfiend though, it's smooth. Saw Rammstein a couple of times, they were okay. Good running music.

I think I talked about this on a gabcast some time ago. To me, Malachi always sounded like the leprechaun from the Lucky Charms commercial.

Look at Jordan, keyboardist from Dream Theater's app called Jordantron for iPad. You don't always make garbage with replication, you can make good stuff.

They make great use of all the new technology that makes mainstream music so bad.  They create their own samples instead of ripping off others.
