And BTW -how do those various culture who dress in a lot of white stay so blindingly bright white?

My guess: they do bleach the snot out of their clothes (with what, before chlorine was easily available, I'd hate to suggest - but I have an idea . . . The use Laundry Bluing (an old-fashioned additive for laundry - a liquid with just a small amount of a impermanent blue dye. It's looks dark in the bottle - but a small amount in a rinse adds a "brightness" to white cloth.) It's also likely they dry them outside in the sun.

Notice this bottle is almost empty. The top line of what's left is right at the bottom margin of the label. Spilling straight bluing on clothes was an epic fail for the traditional happy homemaker in early-to-mid 20Th century US. I was taught to use it by my "whitest sheets in the neighborhood" Queen - my Mom.

All of the above in pure conjecture - maybe they have a special spiritual barrier between themselves and their white fabrics.

There is a huge difference between good-natured teasing, and even disagreements that border on the rude or hostile, and being demeaning towards a poster. We have plenty of bright & articulate posters here - many of them are well endowed in the vocabulary department. Better, they usually manage to make their point with grace and humor, having the humility to back down when they recognize there own failings. They are willing to clarify when misunderstandings take place.

My degree is in English with a specialization in technical communication. I am, however, slightly handicapped (in the golfing sense of the word, not "oh poor pitiful me") in that my typing is mediocre and my spelling sucks. I've learned to compensate, and check carefully, though not always successfully, any serious communication before I send or publish it. And, this forum is one place where i sometimes throw that care to the wind.

Oh well. If you know what I meant to say, then good for me, and you. if you didn't and you give a rat's ass, you can always ask.

To repeatedly criticize another poster's writing rather than just ignore it if it's not up to your standards, or take the time to read for content and meaning, rather than form, is disrespectful, lazy, or both. Someone who is well-skilled in rhetoric knows how to read for meaning, or construction, by choice. If they insist on posting grammar and punctuation critiques without responding to content, and do so consistently, I feel that is harassment. In most cases, it's uncalled for.

Ev, you and I are on the same page. I liked Wanderer's exposition of substance re rant vs. humor. I ignored the snark because it is below his talent level and that's how I roll. Perhaps I should have qualified my "well done." I never support what I call "wolfing" --which is the deliberate belittling under the imagined excuse of humor.

Sometimes if people don't respond to a person's postings, they take it personally. I don't know if that's the case with Wanderer. I consider him a witty and valuable addition to the CoastGab community. The people who stay with us tend to be mature or have a life other than the net posting, so it's no big deal if nobody responds. I've started whole threads where nobody responded, but I just figure I'm more interested in the topic than the other folks are. Nothing personal.

I'll be disappointed if Wanderer goes. I like him.

Fot today's thread life support I offer the following..

Awhile back I sent a friend request to yet another Art Bell on facebook (not the 3rd, this one was relatively inactive till yesterday). At any rate, it was approved today. Fort Rock has already made it over there to worship at the altar, however people are starting to cry fraud saying the email listed wasn't correct. Cursory search of the email provider shows metro manila areas of service. Always a possibility it is fake, but the email originates (or appears to) from a service in the philippines. In fact, using the address listed on his new ham license, his exact highrise is listed as a coverage area.

edit...same email address is listed for his license page at QRZ.com

I am confident this is the real deal...

We've waited inside this restaurant for hours. Our senses have been enticed by the aromas and sounds which we once enjoyed. The menus have all been taken back from our banquet table. But out from the kitchen has come a disgusting bowl of wax-fruit and I for one can't get excited for the next course. Not on the internet kitchen that has no child-proof safety gate to keep the dirty crazy bastards away from the kitchen.

The email address in question is the one from which I've been receiving messages from Art since last week, in helping him to identify and take down some of the fraud photos and call out the hoax page. It's the one he asked me to keep private.

Entering that email address into FB using the search function takes you to that FB profile. This is the same profile that Art on the FF (on the verified 11 year old account) has said is the real deal, and from which he posted on the fake "Arthur W. Bell" page calling it out as a hoax.

Not only is that address a .ph (Philippines), but entering it into Google turned up a posting on a Philippine news comment page from 2009 by someone identifying himself as "an American living in the Philippines" and signed "Art Bell". So if this IS another hoax, either someone has hijacked an email address Art used 2 years ago, or else 2 years ago someone planted a fake post on that page, knowing that in 2011 they would have a chance to fool a couple dozen Art Bell fans into thinking that's who was using it. What a grand conspiracy.

In other words, it all tracks. This is why I made such an effort last week to be as certain as I could be, absent a phone call or face to face meeting, that I was really communicating directly with the man himself. And this is why I'm certain that I have been.

I'm not sure he was aware that by approving people on FB they would be able to see his email address.

As for FR, yes, he was approved as a friend as well. But I've cautioned AB about him, by name, so--it's his judgment call to make.

And if somehow, this STILL isn't really the real Art Bell, in spite of all the evidence--which I doubt, but anything is possible--well, whatever. So be it. I think I'm kinda done if that's the case. Might be kinda done, period.

It's odd to me that he would give you that email address, ask you to keep it private, and then have it available to anyone on his Facebook "friend" list (which I am now on, too, BTW). There is nothing on his info page that suggests the address is at all private.

I wonder if someone needs to give Art some tips on Facebook security.

I've just done exactly that. Unless he's had a change of heart about keeping it private and decided to make it public, I suspect he wasn't aware that by accepting people as his friends, they would be able to see it. I've just emailed him pointing this out and suggesting he change his FB settings.

Incidentally he's made one post on that page:

"Hi to all the new faces, all is well in Manila!"

It was posted using and application known a "Facely for iPhone/iPad". And from one of the pics posted on "People Who Miss Art Bell", we DO know he has an iPad.

So people are going to believe what they want and some will never be satisfied (see: Bin Laden photos), but as far as I'm concerned, the matter is put to bed. It be him.

The kicker for me was finding the address to be listed on his QRZ.com info page. Those profiles are initially generated from license information (Info applicant used when applying/testing for license), then if you create an account, you can add info to the basic license page. Here in the states, it will just show the information available from the FCC ULS website, but you can verify your information and add more to make it a complete profile.

I just hope the folks getting on there accusing him of being fake don't piss him off to the point of leaving FB.

Facebook shuts down so many people's pages a day but this is still going on.. One of the strangest things I may have ever seen with Facebook. The III is all out there calling the real guy a hoax ... Odd stuff happening. Zuckerberg's policies aren't being broken here? I doubt that 100%

I took Art up on his offer to verify his identity via his mindspring email. He responded with a teenage girl-sounding response. Morphiaflow, here is my thought: Airyn kept pressing Art to have an FB page and he finally relented after he showed her the ABIII site. But he didn't want to do it and said if she wanted to run it--fine, she could pretend she was him, just passing news about the family, nothing heavy. She's thrilled because now she gets to help Art like Ramona did. She pretends to be Art, not realizing that her teenage lingo is a dead giveway. Plus I don't believe that a pro like Art who has tone through SO MUCH litigation would a) not know how to spell subpoena, and b) not make sure a public statement was error free.

Airyn as Art uses "ya" instead of "you" and "yea" for "yay." There are random capitalizations, the hallmark of an ESL student. No sixty plus year old on the planet uses "yay" to describe weather, and a streetsmart wise guy like Art? No. It has to be Airyn --Art gave her the password to the mindspring account and she cleaned out the unread emails. Three months ago I emailed Art at the mindspring address and it bounced back, inbox full.

So that's my take. It is Art, but really Airyn, who doesn't know how to upload a photo (yet). A friend of mine has asked for a photo of the fam, so we'll see. I like the idea of communicating with Airyn--I don't care if she wants to play like she's Art.

That's an interesting supposition and I think there may be something to it; it's very possible that they are at least sharing the FB account.

On the other hand the responses I've gotten from the .ph account have been pretty adult in tone and left me with no doubts I was talking to the man.

Regardless, it's emanating from Art's household, and if she's using it, it's with his knowledge and consent, so it's still as legit and as close to the real thing as we are likely to get.

Incidentally, FR/DS has been removed from the real Art's friends list.
