I speak Spanish well enough to amuse native speakers like my lawn guy and my pool guy.  What you say about Indians is true in most Latín American countries. The Indians in Panama have a right to squat and farm on unused government land wherever they want.  It's not uncommon in Chiriqui Province to see their crude shanties with no electricity and no running water nestled in a spot up on a mountain that commands a million dollar view.  They farm land that is virtually vertical but they produce a lot of vegetable crops which they sell readily.   Best I can tell they are happy with their lives and pretty much stay to themselves although you frequently see the women in their colorful dress with their kids in tow around the various stores and businesses.  I don't think it's a matter of them being ridiculed or mistreated but more of a case of mestizos and people of purer Spanish descent looking down their noses at the Indians.

Thanks, interesting. Yeah, the "stuff" I've seen is mainly between the different types of Hispanics and the "darker" or more "Indian" versions. I've met Mexicans, in other settings, who almost make me look like I have a tan. And they own stuff- and the country, basically. I recall, decades ago, some teacher in college (who was Hispanic and fairly outspoken) said that 13 families owned Mexico? Not sure if true. I had a Spanish teacher same year who was German. (Family from Argentina,  barely passed but brought good beer and some schnapps to a 'group study session' and I think she took favor, darn it she was married, but still I think I impressed/begged by that so I passed.)

Can you give us a better argument for the government financially supporting the National Endowment for the Arts and for financially supporting NPR other than a picture?
