Depends on what and how you're discussing something. Leftists love generalizations when they're useful, such as calling anyone that disagrees a "racist" or a "sexist".

In the UK, a couple of years after Thatcher took office in 79, her government's policies started to take effect against some of the very people who put her in office. There was an upsurge of resistance, and otherwise moderate people took a stand against her (they had nothing else to lose by then). I was about 18/19 years old and lucky enough to have a job; 1000's of people in a fifty mile radius had lost theirs, with nothing else to go to.

So far Trump's negotiated Ford and Carrier into staying in the US. He's not even in office yet and has saved at least a thousand jobs. Obama could have done the same, or at least attempted it. He did not. So I suspect we're actually leaving an economic nightmare rather than entering one.

But the 'broad' aspect was written large by the mainly Tory sympathetic press who lumped the redundant; CND demonstrators;  Equal rights (gay and lesbian) demonstrators; anti police demonstrators and a bucket load of other alleged 'left wing' alliances, that I, actually living among it didn't see or hear about. But in the south of England of course (this is long before twatter/fartbook and the net), the readership just saw what was printed in Murdoch's and Rothermere's rags.

Either that, or the left really did cobble together left wing alliances that are actually at odds with each other ideologically, such as with homosexuals and Muslims and used the left-leaning press to concoct a social narrative that makes such things somehow make sense.

I knew several 'left wing' strong trade union supporters who openly hated homosexuals, black people and the 'hippies' who supported CND. But as far as the printed press was concerned,  they were all lumped together.

They're called voting blocs and leftwing politicians *want* them lumped together so they vote in lockstep despite seemingly being at odds.

Part of the problem of discussions like this is that they are often not very interesting, because too many people aren't prepared to accept that they don't have all the answers. Unless there's a reasonable chance that I might learn something from somebody else then I tend to zone out.
