That thought came to me too. "is this real?" I woke up last Tuesday thinking I was in for four more years of being reminded about what a piece of shit I am for having the audacity to exist. I was bracing myself for a terrible day and filling my head with as much of my favorite music as I could. I was just gonna block it all out and wake up the next day expecting a tidal wave of gloat.

About halfway through the night, a friend said, "You need to get to a TV right now". I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The whole next day, I watched hours and hours of election night coverage on Youtube. I fast forwarded to the parts where they realize out Trump's gonna win and watched their faces drop (incidentally, The Fusion Network had the most entertaining coverage, because their panelists were a particularly triggered bunch of millennial clowns).

I love it all. The tears, the riots, the threats. It all feels so, so, so fucking good.

Until 1913 the Senate was appointed by the various state legislatures, to represent the state governments in DC

The core of our system is separation of power.  Important decisions are to be made with a broad consensus, certain decisions are delegated to certain offices.  (one example is Congress declares war and funds the military, the president is commander in chief and manages the dept of defense)

This system has served us well - who decides is as important as what is decided, for long term stability.  We have strayed from this in certain important ways.  The Supreme Court is not supposed to be making social decisions for us, that belongs to the states.  The Presidency has come to have much more power than intended.  The states - who set up the federal government in the first place - no longer have a say in our national government.  And so on.

Thank you, PB! I was hoping someone would explain this to the lad. People get into these conversations not just to disagree with us, but to disapprove of us for wanting to preserve the very system that made us a great country.

Whatever is going on in his brain, I have yet to see any evidence in any interview of any real capacity to understand, digest, analyze or recall complex pieces of information. Or to synthesize or generate anything but superficial ideas on the fly.

His thinking process is clearly much more intuitive than calculating, borne out in part by the fact that he doesn't read much and doesn't seem to think that it's a liability. I expect that he'll receive mostly dumbed-down, Dick and Jane tyoe briefings in an attempt to get him to make reasonable decisions.

But once the details and the subtleties of issues go out the window, it may very well be garbage in, garbage out, resulting in a White House that has big problems explaining what it is doing and reacting to the reactions of others.
