"An anonymous source sent the New York Times documents showing that Donald Trump reported a nearly $1 billion loss on his 1995 tax returns -- which could have helped him avoid paying any federal income taxes for 18 years, the paper reported on Saturday.

The Times, which hired tax experts to analyze the records, determined that “tax rules that are especially advantageous to wealthy filers would have allowed Mr. Trump to use his $916 million loss to cancel out an equivalent amount of taxable income over an 18-year period.”

Man, is he ever smart. Boy is he smart. Smart, smart, smart.

In Canada the carry forward for non capital losses is limited to seven years and the capital losses carry forward are limited to 10 years.  I'm amazed the United States doesn't have similar time restrictions.

On further reflection, maybe his housekeeper (Miss Housekeeping?) did it.

Hmm, yes.  Perhaps a former or current Trump employee.  It's interesting the return address was Trump Tower.

Or...

In a final act of self-sabatoge, did Trump himself leak the returns?!?

For personal returns, they only let you deduct $3,000 a year, so it can take a while to deduct the whole amount. It makes some sense for "the little people."

WKRP did an episode where Arthur Carlson ran for some local office and surged ahead of his incumbent opponent when he unintentionally said in a debate that his opponent was an alcoholic.  Although it was true, Carlson still was unhappy that he made it public and didn't want to win the election as a result of what he felt was unethical behavior.  So, he spends the rest of the episode sabotoging his campaign.

I'm thinking about Trump, the movie, which I think Alec Baldwin basically auditioned for just tonight on SNL. I'm really looking forward to it, now that I'm starting to relax a little about the ending.

Don't relax yet. Wikileaks says Hillary is "done" this Wednesday.

Well okay, but I was expecting it to be a very long movie with plenty of twists and turns near the end. Assange and the Russians were due to make a bigger appearance than they have so far. (Probably too much here for a movie. Maybe it needs to be a mini-series to do it justice.)

Unless they have video of Hillary pushing a wheelchair-bound person off a cliff, I think it'll be okay. I refuse to live in fear of Wikileaks or any KGB-style hijinks.

Good article, thanks. My first thought is that the leaker would be someone who managed to get unauthorized access, not a hacker necessarily but maybe someone who got into the files somehow. Trump himself must keep copies of his returns, on paper or on a PC.

My guess is some lawyer from some distant bankruptcy case in which the tax return was provided as part of discovery. Or Marla Maples.

The world wide web was also supposed to be shut down a few hours ago.

She's getting revenge for him trying to force her to pose nude in Playboy.

It really is at least one new Trump scandal a day being reported now.

You must have got the leak early as well. We here at Correct the Record are hard at work trying to come up with a response for her doing this.

I like the Marla idea. Even better would be Marla and Ivana plotting Donald's downfall. They're both rich enough, with enough cash stashed overseas for when Donald comes after them. No fury like two women scorned.

Has to be someone close; I'd suggest an accountant contact. Old accountancy firm? Hence the mid 90's and not more up to date, unless of course more are forthcoming.

He was a hero because he's a businessman. I like businessmen who don't lose a billion dollars.

So this "scandal" is Trump may not have paid taxes by exploiting tax laws while doing nothing illegal. And I'm supposed to be mad he lost maybe 15% of his net worth in 1994...

Clinton has bigger problems. Besides her and Bill are poor dirt farmers who are just trying to eek out an existence after they left the White House broke and destitute

The Entire Reason trump did not owe taxes is because Bill Clinton signed into effect a bill that allowed his rich property-owning friends to negotiate property value decreases as tax writeoffs two years prior.

So I'm supposed to be mad about Trump taking advantage of a law Clinton signed into effect while Trump has done nothing illegal or unethical?

;D

One of his businesses he declared bankrupt in December 1992, and he had to relinquish effective control of the business.  A bankruptcy a year earlier forced him to sell his personal yacht.

I highly doubt just one year later he was suddenly worth $6 billion.

If you want to 'think' he's some kind of amazing person due to his business acumen, that's fine with me, but you don't get to use batshit idiotic claims to justify your worship.

:).. and Trump is the very standard of propriety? That he's a deranged, misogynistic, infantile, lying, adhd suffering, attention needing, megalomanical bully who has been abandoned by most of the Republican party's major players, politicians and mouthpieces, is neither here nor there I suppose. Power to the people comrade!

Are your arguments so bankrupt that you're bitching about a guy's finances in 1992?

Business goes up and down. This what cracks up so much about Anti-Trump people on this board is they continually show their ignorance about how the economy or money works.

It's bad that he's destroyed the Republican Party and pissed on all the establishment republicans... because...?

The tax break reported in that story had nothing to do with the tax loss carry forward income tax provisions that Trump used to pay zero taxes.  You really are a complete moron.

December 1992.  You made a claim about his finances in 1994.  I replied that the idea that he could be worth $6 billion just one year later didn't make any sense.  Businesses go up and down but that doesn't make anything possible.

...and you continually refute the true but damning attributes that make him not only a liability domestically to the USA but internationally too. Even his bigraphy's ghost writer who knows him well and presumably formed a pseudo friendship with, described him as having the maturity of a petulant nine year old with adhd. I never claimed he broke any laws over this.  I showed that you incorrectly cited a story to claim President Bill Clinton signed legislation that allowed these type of losses to be claimed.

Cite laws he broke or continue going crazy over nothing on an internet message board that used to be devoted to a Mongolian throat singer.

You are delusional.  You show that routinely.

The issue is that he benefited from a rule that allowed him to claim $900 million in tax loss carry forward and yet you 'think' that he's running for President because he's suddenly now all against these sorts of rules.

Either way though, it's just more evidence you're a total moron.

And you're not delusional?

You also claimed that you understand how business works, yet cited a story about changes in real estate business tax rules that clearly had nothing do with the tax rules Trump used here.  In that case though, I think you didn't actually read the story.

Either way though, it's more evidence you're a complete moron.
