Not much to say. Our government (and many citizens) don't want illegal immigrants coming to our shores illegally via boats. We round them up and ship them to detention centres off shore and in other pacific nations. We often attempt to palm many of these illegals off to other pacific nations in return for something or other. For some crazy reason, probably to piss off Trump or to score humanitarian points, Obama made a crazy deal to accept 1,200 of these illegal immigrants. Trump gets in and rightly so says "Why the fuck did we agree to take in Australia's problem."

I have no problem with him thinking that it was a shitty deal that was struck. I do object to him treating a staunch ally like shit.

It seems agreements are only good for the president of the day the deal was struck. This sets a bad precedence.

He's 70 years old, believes he's the centre of the universe; believes the Chinese invented climate change as a tax dodge or something; reminds everyone about his ratings or someone elses; has a wafer thin skin; cannot accept any criticism, and you expect him to get his shit together and not piss off US allies? That was in 96 after a particularly large mass shooting in a tourist area in the John Howard era (same party as the one in power), where there wasn't much in the way of public or political will to oppose the measures following such an event. Of course it hasn't really stopped subsequent events such as the Lindt Cafe Siege, or the Monash University shootings, but if you were to ask the average person on the street (in a city, because the responses in the countryside will be different) they are most likely pro gun control and think guns are the devil.

It has a storied background.  Working from memory I think the AV22  took over 25 years of off again, on again development.  Marines wanted it--large carrying capacity, long legs, much faster than choppers, lands anrwhere. Other services were indifferent.  Some tragic crashes in development.  Obviously new concept is fraught with big challenges.  Test pilots are most always lost in such efforts before flight characteristics are fully understood.  Became very political.  Was introduced in time for Bosnia (I think) and performed well.  I'm not an aviator but I believe Marines swear by them. Air Force jumped on the band wagon after the kinks got worked out and bought a bunch of them.  I believe this is fairly accurate summary.

Trump's threat to send troops into Mexico was meant in jest, according to some unnamed WH guy.  I really wonder how much of the stuff he says is the kind of deliberately provocative language we're used to on here, where a smiley makes all the difference and without one you wonder.  From what I understand, the transcripts given the AP were really excerpts of Trump's side of the conversation, edited to wound.

But the amateur etymologist in me rejoices in the characterization of these conversations as "cordial", which has two definitions.

Sorry to hear that. That is the reason why those of us on the right here in the US get stirred up whenever some left-wing politician calls for more infringement of our gun rights.  As you can see in places like your country and England, when you lose your rights then you are highly unlikely to get them back.  I'm all for common sense reforms to prevent the mentally ill and criminals  from obtaining weapons but beyond that I'm resolved to fight against any and all measures that infringe on our rights as citizens.
