One of the scariest places I've ever been to is Pompeii. It's not because it's right next to an active volcano that could explode at any moment, but because the modern city of Naples is so close that it will meet the same fate whenever Vesuvius blows again.

I live near one. It's thought that the seven cities of gold that several conquistadors searched for was based on culturally filtered southwestern native descriptions of the cities of the Cahokia civilization of the Mississippi valley. They were very advanced, had sun calendars and built enormous temple mounds . . . but had no gold.

Yep, Naples is considered one of two major cities in the world in serious risk of getting taken out by a volcano over the next 50 years. The other is Seattle.

Cahokia is spectacular.  I took a taxi from downtown St. Louis to see it.  Warm spring day, I was the only one there.  Saw a cardinal in a tree.  Bought a soapstone pipe in the gift shop that works great.

Yes, it's an unknown treasure of the Midwest. I love going there. Great museum on the site too.

Redacted had a disembodied voice in her house just the other day. How convenient.
