That sense of being observed...watched?

Or just feeling a presence?

Indeed yes.

Have you ever had the experience of a subject rallying and coming back to full awareness and engaging in animated and pleasing dialog immediately prior to their passing.

We were told my FIL did that in the wee hours of the morning before he passed when for days prior he had been in what appeared to be a heavy and labored sleep, which is to say non-communicative but still trying to hang on to life.

In the time he awakened and engaged the staff in conversation there was time for a priest to visit and administer last rites and then just as quickly (1/2 an hr.) he slid back into the final deep sleep and passed.

We were hours away and unable to get to him but the staff was so kind in assuring us he was charming, happy, and at peace with life.

A huge comfort to us, so what you folks do is greatly appreciated.

One woman I sat with  for a vigil was facing the wall. I never really could see her face, so it was nice to see a photo of her on her dresser. It was pretty much looking at me the entire time I was with her, and I felt that she was somehow in that photo, looking at me. Saying "See me. I'm not just the dying woman in the bed".

Another man was someone I had seen over the course of several months. My last visit with him, he was a lot more confused than I'd seen him before. At one point, he looked up and reached his hand out. I felt he was talking to someone I couldn't see. In fact, later that visit, he told me that he was just talking to himself. I think he might have been embarrassed.  He died not long after.

I typically only see the people I visit with every couple of weeks, so I can't say that I saw any of them "rally" per se. I do know it happens, though. I've heard and read several accounts similar to that of your FIL. (Kind of amazing, really). Apart from a couple of patients, the ones I sit vigil with are people I've only seen that once.

My dad, when he was dying of cancer, had gotten really bad. I know there was worry he wouldn't last much longer.  I traveled to visit with him and spent several days sitting with him in the hospital.  After he died, only a month or so after this, I was told that they hadn't seen him doing that well in a long time. 

I was standing in line when the woman in front of me struck up a converstation. She said she was just getting off work in hospice. I asked her if she ever sees spirits. Her response was "All. The. Time." How about you, Belln?

I can't say that I've seen one while with a patient. Not so far. I believe it can and does happen. I just haven't experienced it (yet).
