Don't people realize this country is entirely founded upon bullshit? If you kicked the illegals out or tried to kick out all the corruption in the banking industry, the economy would collapse.

There would be a "correction" but could be handled. Many other countries pay far, far more for stuff. Heck it might even encourage savings, barter, manufacturing, studying degrees/skills that are worth something, local production and commerce/innovation, etc. We have a vast amount of natural resources, capital, and people- even if illegals are gone. And, actually, those countries buy our produce (recall how our ethanol subsidies hurt Mexico and Central America?) We could be 'fortress America' especially if in with Canada, and even some from Ol' Mex.) But nobody is saying total autarky!

It is a curiosity to me.  I think it has to do with a completely fragmented, alienated society with little social cohesion like some other places that seem more culturally unified.  There was a book out some years ago about this state of alienation, called something like "Bowling Alone" which warned of this kind of decline.

We're paranoid because we're always competing against each other, mostly descendant from rabble that Europe and later other continents didn't want, high on satisfying ourselves, including believing in Manifest Destiny, and unwilling to provide meaningful social safety nets.  Our neighbor to the north has nearly the same demographics as we do but few of the problems.
