If a space elevator could be built of the right type,  the companies that want to mine asteroids would use it to get into orbit.  You would have crawlers that would go up using traction and this would greatly reduce the cost and risk to launch things into orbit.

One REALLY big problem is the threat of terrorist or hostile nation attack. You can't afford to build a bunch of these, and if it ever gets destroyed at the earths surface, you have no idea where the thing is going to end up.

Another challenge is the amount of current that can be generated by a conductor being spun through the earth''so magnetic field.  Google the TeatherSat experiments they attempted with the shuttle.  The amount of current expected if they could have ever extended the whole cable was tremendous.  TSS was one of the most complex and dangerous payload flown by the Shuttle.
