Dude, I didn't expect anyone to get all insightful and zen in this thread, but ye have gone and done it. I know you were using the term zen somewhat figuratively, but when you mention getting to a place of bliss in your second paragraph, it suggests a more deliberate focus on the very real state of nirvana, satori, the great emptiness, etc. I would distinguish this, however, from a facsimile thereof in which appears freed from woe and worry due to not giving a damn. I would say that true equanimity, bliss, samadhi, et al, stems more from not giving a damn about outcome, about the fruits or action, etc. Remaining poised no matter if the full mama lode of fecal matter hits the fan.
That is a heck of an analysis...I appreciate the insight and thoughts. I found myself thinking a little of it today as I have a project coming to fruition over the next two weeks.  I am unable to "not give a damn", but I am able to worry a little less following the logic in your post.  It only works when actively thinking about it, but that is good enough... :)

Right you are, guvnuh, and you are of course correct that one must bear these insights in mind, i.e., practice cognitive awareness of one's own thought patterns, reactions, behavior, etc., in order to benefit from said insights.

Well, since this thread has once again died down, I'd better provoke you all into activity by hangin' it out there, just let it dangle, and dance in a circle singing "I give a da-amn! Ha ha ha-ha ha!" And this:

paladin1991

Damn you!  Just when I thought I was out.  YOu pull me back in.  And I just gave you what I don't give.

There's no escape. We all give a damn sooner or later. Just accept it. And give me your credit card number while you're at it. It's OK if you only have a $300 credit limit, I don't give a damn.

I tend to favour the American Damn over most other international swear words. In fact, it's the world's reserve profanity and you would be very unwise to look at anything else, despite their meretricious attractions. Although we might suffer upturns and downturns with most other obscenities (I lost a fortune by speculating on the Argentinian Fuckit last year, and took a major bath in the nineties cornering the market for the Chinese Screwyoo), I always advise my clients to keep a ready store of Damns for a rainy day. And don't just hand them out to anyone, dammit!!

Do you think the American peculiarity 'Asshat' will ever go international?

Mmmm...

<falls off chair, breaks noggin> Where in the Christ did you find this, pate? Jesus, I used to watch Robyn in the 90s, back in the glorious days of NY public access cable, and may even have seen the clip you show here.

Sredni, my vast friend, once again you demonstrate why, although I don't, wouldn't and couldn't give a damn for most people, I would make an exception for you. Call me sometime. I'll be waiting by the phone, in something sheer with my fingers lightly clasped on the stem of a martini glass.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I don't give a damn about not giving a damn.  I also give less of a damn that you don't give a damn that I don't give a damn about not giving a damn.   I think I'm almost through the program now.  That felt good damn it.  DAMN!

Caruthers612

The best twelve step program in the world couldn't cure me. I don't now nor will I ever give a damn.

There's a guy in front of my house sanding the fence on my deck with a power sander. He's been at it for days, in preparation for repainting the fence. The noise is like a large dentist's drill. While I have hitherto been sworn to not give a damn about a damn thing, a pledge which I've unwaveringly upheld, I must tell you that I'm weakening, I'm coming dangerously close to giving a damn about that noise. Please, please, my fellows, I entreat you for your support. Now is my hour of need.

What?  I could give a damn.

Excuse me, but is this the place to recycle my damns or do I leave them out at the curb?

I've been waiting for someone to bring a Tinker into this conversation for several pages now.

Good point about the Tinker's damn. I also do not give a Grand Coolee damn.

If "ifs" and "ands" were pots and pans, there'd be no need for tinkers.

VtaGeezer

Tinkers?  "Travelers" if ye please!

No Tinkers, peddlers, Fuller Brushmen or Irish.  Dammit.
