Yep.  We have to put up with that problem of too many old people.  Having more kids is just kicking the can into the future.  It's not a solution.  Bite the bullet.

It really depends on how the biotechnology revolution goes over the next 30 years. If you buy what some gerontologists such as Oxford's Aubrey de Grey are saying, then life spans are about to begin dramatically increasing. That changes equations all over the place, especially if we all live 200-300 or more years.

Quote
My husband and I have retired.  We can survive very well without socsec.  We did what all people should do, limit family size, live below our means, manage our own retirement accounts, etc.
Not all people with whom I worked did these things.  I don't think people should get rewarded with public funds because they did a sloppy job with their lives.  Public money, to me, is only for emergencies.

I agree. Of course there is a need for public money, but it's a badly abused system right now. I've planned pretty thoroughly specifically because I don't want to have to rely on social security. I've got another 25 years before I get to that stage and I expect the system will have collapsed by then.

Quote
Things that we put money into, we encourage.  Many of our problems with migration are caused by (I think) our putting money in the wrong places, albeit with the best of intentions.

That's certainly true, if you know that you can go to a country and immediate go on public assistance, then it makes no sense not to.

Trump is as vile and disgusting a racist as Hitler or Jimmy Carter.

Link.
Trump is talking about immigration law applicable to foreigners, not tearing up the Constitution.  Pundits are claiming that if he was elected, Congress would freeze him out. I doubt it.  Once the election is behind them, a lot of the tut-tutting will fade, D & R.  If there are more attacks in the US, and if Obama keeps rope-a-doping over ISIS, Clinton will be done.

he's amusing himself pushing things as far as they can possibly go.

Did you see Huma across the street yesterday and get a hard on for her or something?   Most people I know, and these are people from all walks of life who aren't necessarily friends -  conservatives/liberals etc  - and they see this country as going downhill and let's be honest, it goes downhill faster and faster all the time.   The deficit is run amok.  Personal freedoms are being eroded left and right.   Privacy is non-existent and the government has your last 15 years worth of browsing history stored away on some hard drive.   Racial division is probably the worst it's been since the 60's.   The people who come here want the benefits of American society but they don't want to be American.   It's time for a wake up call.  I don't give a shit if that wakeup call is Trump or someone else, but I'm so fucking sick of the establishment it's high time they truly understand that they're not going to keep up this charade of caring for the little guy while pandering to big banks and corporations.   In most states you smoke pot you go to jail.   Rob the American people of millions or billions and get off scott free?   Have friends in high places and get favors?   Throw money at social problems instead of addressing the real problem of people not taking responsibility for themselves and their families?   We need to get back to what made this country great, and it's not about pandering to every little group of individuals who says "boo hoo you hurt my feelings."    So, fuck the GOP.  If Trump makes them lose then it will be the biggest eye opening moment in the history of presidential elections for those ass wipes.  They can either  grow some balls and start saying it like it is - like Trump does - or STFU and get out of the way.

Video later.

I agree with all the issues you've brought up, literally right down the line. But why anyone believes this loudmouth with a shockingly limited vocabulary has the answers to these legitimate problems is beyond me. He was asked this morning about his brilliant policy idea "keep the Muslims out" - how would that work practically? He said someone would ask if you're a Muslim at the border. OH, OK. That's basically the same system that allowed Tashfeen Malik in - "are you a terrorist?" "nope!" "approved!"

Because Trump has to keep topping himself with more and more absurd statements I can see him saying "these Muslims are lying about being Muslims - we have to keep all these brown people out until we know what the hell is going on!" I mean, this is stuff straight out of The Onion.

Who would I like to see in the White House? Nobody running. If we can reanimate Barry Goldwater, I'm a Goldwater 2016 guy. So I get the "burn it all down" mindset, especially after seeing Ron Paul's 2012 campaign get torpedoed.

That's what it is, helplessness. I watched Ron Paul get deep sixed as well and realized that the whole thing is just a dog and pony show. Well, might as well go for the flashiest pony, which is Trump. The sad fact is that it's probably not mathematically possible for the Republicans to ever win a presidential election again no matter who they run. The electoral vote landscape just isn't there. As far as the presidency, it's probably a one party system at this stage and what we've been watching over the last decade is the Republican politicians raiding what they can while they still can.

If Trump is the Republican nominee, I'm voting for him.  I'm sick and tired of the same old Dems and Reps.  Enoughs enough.

I don't see it that way.  I see it that he is saying, in essence, "hey there's a problem, I don't know exactly how it's going to get fixed this second, but until we can come up with some way to do that, let's restrict entry".    He has said it wouldn't be permanent.   What it will take to track them, aside from requesting that everyone who enters eats a strip of bacon,  I don't know.   They're not citizens (at least the bitch wasn't), they do not have the same rights in this country that we have as citizens.  Maybe you track the fucking hell out of them.  Make them say where they're going to be living while they're here, and if they aren't there through some automated check system (robo-calls for example) go knocking at the door.    Require anyone that might be harboring them to allow entry into their location.   Tap their phones and internet lines.   Require they come to some government office every 30 days and be re-interviewed about what they've been doing.   And of course, this doesn't have to be done with everyone, you can certainly put some automation and profiling to picking those who are the riskiest.     That's just me thinking off the top of my head.  I'm sure there are a ton of things that are even better than this.

But anything is better, even just asking if they're a radical muslim, than nothing at all, which is what we do now.

Donald Trump's anti-Muslim rhetoric undermines US national security by boosting the Islamic State (IS) group, the Pentagon has warned.
The leading Republican presidential candidate has said Muslims should be banned from entering the US, in the wake of the deadly California attacks.
But Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said such talk "bolsters Isil's narrative", referring to IS.
Without mentioning Mr Trump by name, Mr Cook said: "Anything that bolsters Isil's narrative and pits the United States against the Muslim faith is certainly not only contrary to our values but contrary to our national security."

Everyone understands that terrorists seek to marginalize-then militarize- those already here, divide and conquer our society, or make the stronger powers over-react. Islam plays a long game of seeking power. But IS, I'm not afraid of using that term,  their political/religious goal is not like normal terrorists and they SEEK the final battle, end times now- I say give it to them! Not in thier oddball landwar final apocalyptic battle but, same effect in different places and using modern technology in their homelands and everywhere they are. If we don't have the will? Out source some of it to the Serbs, Croats, or Russians. Even Israelis, Christian Phlangeists, even some of the Kurds, or fellow Muslims etc (have to be careful there, no technology given to Muslims, maybe just small arms and conventional or help from above.) Kick Turkey out of NATO and no EU for them. Maybe take it back even. They are no good. Use local hoodlums and hooligans to take out the fifth columnists already in our lands if police/politicians and "polite society" don't have the will. Simply turn a blind-eye and no police response and a wink-wink, nudge-nudge. Get the ultras/firms together and let them clean out their suburbs and malcontents. Muslims who don't like, provide a safe harbor and tickets back to their homeland. And no hand-wringing and bitching about "human rights." No "collateral damage" or worries about women and children. Heck even the more militant Hindus etc types if taken off the leash in some areas. With proper oversight simple famine can take care of many of these types. Or see what ol' Dr. Wouter Basson has developed over these past few years in retirement, maybe. (Must be done with caution and to ensure whatever virus/bacteria etc can't mutate or spread.) And end it. Send Islam, at least as it has been known since times immemorial, to dustbin of history. I'm kidding, of course  ;)

I don't give much validity this argument.  Those clicking the IS tweets or FB pages hate us deeply already.  Trump's rhetoric is a minor boost to IS recruiting if that.  It's a crisis, though, for the talking heads now exploding, who seem to believe our Western values should be a kamikaze mission.  The sooner Muslims are motivated to take out their own trash, the better, and Trump's word are jarring them back to reality.

Our Western values are diametrically opposite to the murderous bastards (hereafter called MB's) calling themselves IS. Trump is perpetuating the idea that a particular 'religion' should be treated in a special way. All it will do is make those who have resisted the call from the MB's to join in to do so "because lads, America hates us anyway." Trump though steers away from the practical methods he'd implement, or it's logical conclusion. All he says is 'until they know what the hell is going on'. As someone who is supposedly running to run the show, he lacks a few things like detail, practicalities and fall out. Has he considered those white people who have converted to Islam but show no outside sign of having done so? What of American Muslims who have travelled abroad on holiday? Will they be denied entry back to the US?

If Trump forbids Muslims entering America; be sure it will be reciprocated; There are many many US workers and business interests in Muslim countries, and the block will be put on Americans (especially none Muslims) entering there. Now you and I might not care too much if we don't have those interests, but the shit will not just hit the fan, it will spread far and wide.

I agree that all Muslims should get their act together in dealing with their own; but Trump's 'idea' won't work, and will be counter productive. He's too far up his own arse and has no place being a candidate for President. He doesn't give a shit for those who might put him in office. If he did, he'd be selling property for just over cost and wouldn't have pissed off many people in Scotland.
It was debated in parliament today (because of an online petition demanding his ban from travelling to the UK) if he should be allowed here. And almost universally it was said he shouldn't be denied entry to the UK, with the pithy remark he shouldn't be denied what he is willing to deny others.

If blustery rhetoric is all that is needed to push people of a certain religion into becoming terrorists then perhaps they were already headed in that direction anyway. Perhaps, at least in some aspects, the religion really is to blame in this scenario?

If we're to include religion as an 'excuse' to murder then all religions need to be thrown in. Right wing Christian bastards have murdered as many Americans as Muslims in the last ten years. Neither are acceptable. It's what makes Trumps rhetoric empty. Brain washing is the culprit. It's why I'm an athiest. If some find comfort from it and they keep it to themselves and don't harm anyone, then fair enough. But all religions have bigots at some level; and it's insidious and not civilised.

You are getting bizarre in your pro-Muslim rants? Are you saying by this bizarre statistic that "Right wing Christian bastards" have murdered as many Americans as Muslims have murdered Americans in the last ten years? Murdered as many fellow Americans themselves? Or murdered as many Muslims as Muslims have murdered Americans over the last ten years? Or murdered as many Muslims as Muslims have over the last ten years? And where do you get this stat? How many "right wing," Christians born of unwed mothers are included in statistics? And how, pray tell, were they identified in the criminal statistics as "right wing," "Christian," (I assume one could tell from birth certificates and public records if their mom was married?) And even if your pro-Muslim made-up stat were true--- what does that have to do with the Muslims killing, enslaving, etc Muslims, blacks, Europeans, non-Muslims in their lands for centuries?
