EVERYTHING goes through the board before it hits the air.  The board is THE switcher for all different inputs.  For what he does, he has about a PERFECT set up there.
I prefer the old style boards like his, the digital touch-screen boards look sexy, but are far more twitchy and subtle fade ins and fade outs and finicky controls are a lot harder
to do.
