On June 3, 1965 the late Ed White took the U.S.'s first tentative steps in space outside of the Gemini 4 capsule. Since that time nearly forty-three-and-a-half years ago Americans have been walking in space- and the Moon-on a somewhat regular basis. During that period of time an occasional tool or bolt has slipped from the grasp during an EVA, but until yesterday an entire suitcase full of critical space tools has never drifted away from our crack team of highly trained astronauts. Enter Heidemarie Martha Stefanyshyn-Piper.

"As Heidemarie-Piper cleaned up a large glob of grease...the tool case somehow became untethered and floated away along with a pair of grease guns, wipes and a putty knife..."

Normally one would thinkl losing the equivalent of a steamer trunk full of space tools might cause a few NASA personnel to gnash their teeth, but thus far the reaction has been "perfectly understandable Heidemarie," no problem. In the natural scheme of life, if a lowly NASCAR mechanic had lost a socket wrench to Jimmie Johnson's car during a race, that mechanic would be working at a body shop in Furnace Creek, California. Why is the reaction so different towards Heidemarie, the first woman to be a lead mission spacewalker?  ;:)

ANYONE losing a casefull of tools should have their asses handed to them-male or female. However, to imply that she was the first to do so because she is a woman is just wrong.

I had to think of something to wake up this sleepy forum for my first post.  An outdated chauvinistic attitude always seems to work.  ;D

Hey, that's not nice! I would not have Noory's baby (even if I were a woman)... but I may have agreed to attend a UFO convention with Linda Moulton Howe if she were a couple decades younger.

This is a badly needed forum folks. I'm glad I found it.

Nobody in their right mind would.  ;)

The stigma of being Noory's bitch goes away after 5 posts, then you become his biggest fan. I know, it's only slightly better. I think at 100 posts you get something else under your name. Then at 250. So you'd better post and post often! The points system is under the forum rules or something.

If we can design Roomba robotic vacuum cleaners, why can't our best scientists design a garbage collecting device capable of variable orbits?  Daedalus could have done it with feathers, sticks, beeswax, and integrated circuits.

Screw going back to the moon, or sending more rovers to Mars.  Let's clean up our own biosphere before taking our trash where no man has gone before.

(Dibs on the space suited Russian monkey skeleton.)

Obligatory Family Guy jokes:

Lois: Thank God Heidemarie wasn't navigating the Exxon Valdez that time or things might have turned out badly.

Stewie: Heidemarie left Rupert where?!

Bryan: I've lost a bone or two.

Chris: Maybe the tools will evolve and destroy the planet like in the Bible.

Peter: What's the big deal?  Just walk off the stage and get the stupid tools.  I bet the tools just drifted over to the Capricorn One set that O.J. Simpson still sometimes revisits to reminisce about his less stressful glory days as an athlete who fortunately learned enough basic acting skills at the time so that he could one day use those skills in a court of law.  (insert flashback of OJ on Capricorn One set, as reenacted by Chris Rock: "Hey mother-bleepers-, this mother-bleeping- spaceglove doesn't fit!)

[back to Peter]

Peter: NASA sucks.  In fact, its own initials contain its own acronym.  NASA stands for NASA Always Sucks Ass.

Bryan: Actually, Peter, that's pretty cool.  It's infinitely self referential.

Peter:  (pause)  Baaaaaaaad  dog.

[Scriptwriter note:  I would totally wreck that chick.  Those smart girls like Heidemarie do it for me.  Yeah.  Shuttle requesting permission to dock.]

EvB

Okay -- okay - I gotta admit it.  I made a "woman" joke to myself as I heard this bit of news in the car on the way to class.  "Whoops" I thought "dropped her purse."

And - I'm not sure it's a "hand their ass to them" situation for ANYONE.  I mean - shit happens when you've got gravity on your side for the love of God!

Frys Girl

If some aliens find that tool kit I hope they won't use it against us somehow. How scary.
