Do you have a smart phone?  If so, which one, android (google) or iPhone (apple)?

We have both in the house.  I know about news aggregate sites and using RSS feed that way, but not so much with podcasts.  is it just a link to the latest updated show?  Or does it automatically download shows to ones device/computer when keith uplads them?

Thank You sbaustin

It is basically the same as a news aggregator but for mp3 files.  You add the RSS feed (which is just a link) to the podcast app.  Most apps can be configured to check the feed daily and download a new episode automatically or you just touch the one you want to download, it downloads and you listen to it.  In a nutshell, makes it super easy to listen to each episode from your mobile device.

Based on Chefy's post above, i think ill wait to mess with it until all the bugs have been worked out. Besides im just downloading from my home puter and uploading to dropbox. Not sure if this is even ideal, but it works for me at the moment.

Yea, it's the security feature...I'm just downloading each show MP3 file and playing later...I like to put it on my USB drive and plug into my car radio for my drive to work...

I have kicked some ideas around with the guys upstairs that might help with some of the issues but I don't think we will ever be able to avoid some episodes not downloading due to the expired links.  That 403 error is from where the mp3 file were hosted (your removed post).

Yea I removed it as I read above and you explained why that will occur...I have never been a podcast guy, but I can see where folks really like it...I put a lot of things on my car radio USB drive, so I end up copying a file anyway to it, so the RSS is not really necessary...I know a lot of people will use the AUX port cable with their smartphone or the Blue Tooth connection...but the sound quality of the audio file playing directly from the USB drive is absolutely the BEST!

I was thinking about writing a chrome extension to help display all the podcasts on one page to make it easier to download history.

That's a good idea...clean and easy to work with...

But the thing about a podcast app is it will remember where you paused a podcast if you stop or want to listen to a different podcast for a while. When you go back to listening to the other podcast it will start where you left off. Also, it will mark podcasts as read, so it's easy to keep track of which episodes you've missed (if you fall behind). You can easily hide/unhide episodes that you've already listened to. It's a lot harder to keep track of all this using a USB drive unless you are listening to each show the next day and not falling behind.

And most podcasts provide a brief description of the episode in the RSS feed, so it's easy to pick out episodes you want to listen to if you don't have time to listen to every episode. I hope the MITD feed starts providing better descriptions in the future. If I don't recognize the guest's name, I'm not sure what he/she will be talking about.

And a podcast app allows you to make a playlist and shuffle the list around depending on what you want to listen to.

Maybe your car stereo provides better functionality for USB drives, but mine doesn't do all these things. I just have to select a file and when it's done it goes to the next file in an order the stereo set.

Has anyone gotten the feed to work on DoggCatcher? I can see the episode list, get the Time Traveller icon, but still don't get the actually audio files. Those continue to glitch/fail on download. Anyone having a different experience with DoggCatcher?

Glad to hear you're still working on this and I really do appreciate it but coming from the podcast world of Stitcher where downloads and streams seem to work all the time is an adjustment. Am trying a new strategy of only listening to downloaded shows and that seems to be working much better for me.

Something I noticed yesterday (maybe the evening before) and wanted to share,  Pocket Casts on the ipod 6G needed a third space in place of the @ in the email address. Using only two spaces or %40 for some reason pulled up show links that would not download except for the Aug 10 show. Don't know why but the ipod 5g still works fine with just the two spaces. The behavior was repeatable even after reinstalling Pocket Casts.

How much time passed between downloading first show and the second?

The two spaces I think you mean underscore.  I added the ability to accept two __ or three ___ instead of @ because some apps have trouble with it.  It isn't a standard or anything.

Yes your'e right underscores not spaces also three vs. two made a difference. Don't follow your question about how much time. But another new behavior with Pocket Casts, on start it seems to refresh the list of shows then display a new duplicate show listed above the previous show which was already downloaded and partially played and the new identical copy shows not played or downloaded. In this case the time between refreshes was maybe 15 min.

I had like a hiccup with RSSradio but i think it was this stupid iphone being a little "whore" (sorry for the technobable).  actually i think i just don't have a great cell signal in my urban super-bunker... but yeah i was getting a message that i didnt have permission when i queued up a second show last night.  THen while on my way into work today I just let them all rip and apparently they are downloading one by one.

The links are only good for about 15 minutes.  If the time between downloads is that long I am not surprised you might be having a problem.  As for the duplicate episodes, I've put out a support requests to pocket casts to see how they are handling certain elements of the feed to see if we can accommodate it.

Streaming probably won't work at all with any app.  You will be better off downloading them.

In Pocketcasts you have to:

If you have special characters in your login, replace them with these replacements:
Replace @ with %40
Replace the . with %2E

No special characters in my password actually, but I can't seem to get Pocket Casts to even discover the RSS feed...am I doing something wrong?

hey sbaustin,

whats the "best" app for i-crap?

Downcast has seemed to work really well for the iShits (me included). Beyond pod beta 4.1.47 or above for androids. Only available as a beta right now.  I know a few use beyond pod version three and haven't heard any complaints.

Yesterday I contacted podcast addict and that app will NOT work.

I've been using rssradio and it seems to work ok but I was wondering what the pro's use.  Do you drink gatorade?
