I've never really had the dilemma, living in states where my vote has never meant anything electoral college-wise.  I pretty much only register for state propositions.

The state and the county are where you can make a difference. If the states would stop taking federal kick-backs and kick the fed out of their legislative process, we'd all be a lot better off.

I tend to be more Jeffersonian too but I suppose we wouldn't have had any civil rights changes if it hadn't been for federal intervention. I think the original idea was a practical one in that it attempted to address the specifics of regional difference while still allowing citizens to feel like they're living in one country and not a collection of radically different ones. Who knew it would get so complicated? I had a good laugh when I heard how into the musical, Hamilton, Obama is. I really don't know much about it but it somehow seems right for him.
