I'm pretty sure the original Eckankar guy did the same.  He built something surprisingly like how JK Rowling designed Harry Potter.

The line between fiction and reality is blurred. You can write a novel that people see as quasi-real, such as the Da Vinci Code or even Star Wars where people now will identify themselves as "Jedi" in censuses of religion. Or you can go past the line and write a novel that people see as something more, something presented as a religious text but might be fiction. It's the art of the ecstatic truth, you can blur the line between fiction and fact and sell tons of books. All one has to do is drop their ethics like L. Ron Hubbard did. And Hoagland for that matter, though I think he's so crazy at this point that he actually believes what he wrote.
