In some ways, yes. But trying to judge speed and distance is a bitch. In Vietnam, we had radar homing missiles which would take out SAM sites which were using radar. The NV troops got smart really quick. They would keep their radars off and try and visually point the SA-2s in the general direction and then turn on the radar right before firing the missile.

I get that it would be hard as heck to manually shoot down a plane but aren't warthogs kinda slow moving or is that just the movies

Pretty slow, usually under 300 knots but when circling a target, closer to 150. When they are firing the 30mm cannon the plane seems to almost stop.
