I'm not a planetary scientist, but I can easily do that with the GIMP    ' Filters > Distorts > Emboss ' function.  All that needs to be done is to overlay a pattern, colorize it close to the background color, then emboss it. In fact, That was the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw that picture - that it looks EXACTLY like an embossed GIMP modification.
Just saying.

The clip at that mark looked to be from Jay Weidner's Apollo/Kubrick documentary which I enjoyed. Hoagland makes an appearance in that as well, misinterpreting 3M scotchlite arrays to be space needles and thrill rides. Bless him.

Will the Hoagie fallback of "symmetry" get me out of this one?  Seriously though, I agree, your explanation makes sense, at least superficially.  As I understand it, the latest trend in Martian planetary geology is to compare features and processes to those known from Earth-based geology. That is a good start, but there are some features like the above that don't have a precedent.

How would a crater fill up with sedimentary material and erode in a symmetrical way where the inner rim is completely eroded all the way around? Or is the question wrong - its filled with volcanic fallout, then flooded with early martian rains before the atmosphere was lost. Even then there would need to be a flow within the crater to create the erosion. (Its certainly not wind as the crater walls would act as a wind brake.) 

There are other issues I have with what we have been told about Mars. The Martian dunes look Earth-like - but how can they exist if the atmosphere is only 1% as thick? Would that not take 500 mph winds to sculpt the same features or deposit sand sized grains on the landers and rovers? Officially reported the winds are no more than about 60 mph.

I am not anti-science, I am just suspecting intellectual dishonesty covered by more layers of admissions and new fudgings in some kind of whack-a-mole game. I would still suspect this even if every one of Hoagland's pareidolic wonders is false.

I suspect that Mars is more Earth-like than any official data suggests. Similar to the desert areas of Antarctica, with lower density and oxygen content, but not 1% - maybe more like 30%.

There are some oddities in the image. Zoom the upper left quadrant of the structure and check the shadows that the rim of the outer ring are casting.  (The lighting is coming from the upper left  - which is the default for lighting effects in GIMP.  Coincidence ) They are different than if the upper portion of the rim were smooth, in other words, they indicate a variance in the height of the rim - if the photo is legit.  I don't see any pixel smearing on extremely high magnification of the image (although this can be avoided by an experienced image manipulator )
But, there is also shading where there shouldn't be. Some can be attributed to the possibility of a chasm, but a couple of others imply a double lighting angle or shadows missing where they should be showing.  It's very difficult to tell (and I'm not a forensic image analyst. )
So, what do we have ?
1. The picture has not been manipulated and that is an actual artifact with some anomalies I can't account for; through my lack of knowledge on Martian geology . (Let's rule out lens flare or any other naturally occurring phenomenon - No swamp gas.  )
Or;
2. We are dealing with a highly experienced professional in the area of digital image forensics and image manipulation.
Or maybe something in between ?
