WTF?  The movie doesn't come out for months.

I was hoping for a bit more from the trailer than that! I grew up with this stuff and can't help looking forward to it (even if I know it will probably be so-so) but it looked like a very generic trailer to me. I hope this isn't going to be the final Batman film all over again, with ludicrous amounts of hype, and then the finished product making Godfather 3 look like Citizen Kane. I don't want to see a bunch of kids messing about, I want the old-guard!! And where the fuck was Luke!!? Having his theme over the top didn't bloody count!! I hope Abrams doesn't turn this into the sort of anonymous multiplex balls that were the Star Trek films

I find it odd that Jedi-ism is on the down-low 30 years after Luke saved the galaxy.

Anyway, after trying and failing to get through JJ Abrams Star Trek twice now, I imagine I'll probably hate this. And I'm a huge fan of the originals.

It's well over two hours, which is not a good sign for me. A snappy 90 minutes might have made for a refreshing change, but they want to cram as much stuff in as they can and it can get very tedious. I can't even remember the name of the last Batman film right now, but it went on for ever and felt like they had no idea how to tell a story, but it had the hell hyped out of it. As usual with these things, the fanboys will go into ecstasies whatever pile of junk it is, and then we might get some sort of consensus in a week or two if people thought it sucked or not. Abrams name on the lid isn't a positive for me, and I bet we won't get anything actually 'bad', just a bit anonymous, with a half hour of mindless kinetic fireworks at the end to reassure the drooling morons in the audience that they are getting their money's worth. I can't recall a single film that gets made these days that doesn't have a pointless extended light show tacked on the end. And if I have to put up with some drama school bint wandering about in the desert for the first third of the film then I will tune right out.

Eh, I think I moved on from this in the last century.

It was certainly the case when "in space, no one can hear you scream" came around.

Now that was one cool movie.  I could have done without all the other ones, though.

And it's still brilliant! That one never gets old. Why they wanted to make Prometheus baffles me because they took all the mystery of the first film and ruined it. There is a good 'making of' on YouTube where they said that a lot of the chest bursting scene was improvised (well, the reactions from the cast were) because they didn't tell them what exactly was going to happen. Also, Sigourney Weaver was a newbie and there was a bit of tension with the rest of the cast because she was the lead in the film but hadn't 'paid her dues' enough, supposedly.

Yes, Star Wars isn't a patch on Alien.

I remember the buzz on Alien and, especially, for the chest explosion scene shock.  All before the internet.  Yes, I've seen the "making of" on the tube and the improvisation that added to the scene.  Great acting, great writing, great directing, and, yes, even great special effects, which added to and supported the movie without becoming the movie, like most of the CGI festivals of today.  Heck, you didn't even see much of the Alien for most of the movie but it's relentless pursuit of the crew and the "haunted house" atmosphere of the Nostromo kept you on your seat.  Just a brilliant movie all around.

I stood in line to see it the first time and it was more than worth it.  I'd stand in line again to see it on the big screen.  "Prometheus" was such a disappointment.

Alien is one of my all time favorites. A SciFi masterpiece that probably should have never been followed up on, especially not to the point of Prometheus. I feel the same with Predator, there should have been only one and getting to the point of Alien vs. Predator was a ridiculous insult to both of the original films.

Star Wars I have trepidations over. Disney is a very different animal than Lucasfilm was, and whatever shows up on the screen will be the product of endless focus groups, market studies, test screenings and god knows what else. Whatever it is it will be a product not a movie, and as a result it can turn out really good as Mad Max: Fury Road recently did, or it can be absolutely terrible like a Fast and Furious movie.

I completely agree, SciFi.  Well said.  It's a shame when something is completely homogenized, sanitized, and packaged by group think, political correctness, and other crap, all to the point of complete dreck.

Besides big budgets, and the political correctness that must be forced down our throats, the actors know that they can overcome anything with CGI and airbrushing and that they are the "sideline" to the actual movie which is CGI creatures or special effects. I also wonder about the training and quality of some of the actors today. The new Madmax was an example. Pretty good, considering, but not nearly as "gritty" and realistic as the original one. Where the actors seemed really crazy and you had action you cared about because it looked like normal town gone south. "Wake In Fright" is another awesome Australian movie. My two cents. Of course I'll see the new movie but not holding much promise. I consider the original ones more of a fantasy than SCI-FI, still loved them but more western, royal, samurai type of stuff gone to space.

It takes all the art and spontaneity out of it and reduces everything to cookie cutter predictability. And no company is worse for that type of stuff than Disney. At least George Lucas, for all his faults, was willing to trudge on and do the second set of movies as he envisioned. At least they were still George Lucas movies. What we will get from Disney will be a product. It's like that with everything corporate these days, look at Dave. The end result suffers after all of the corporate concerns are met.

Now, if I were in control, I would do something crazy like hand Star Wars to Werner Herzog and give him a free hand to do whatever he wanted with it. I can only guess what the outcome would be.

He has made money on his movies and it pretty famous. Now you wouldn't make AS MUCH money for sure but it would be a more interesting film, for sure with Herzog directing. And you might risk a budget as large because he would demand they build real spaceship and actors would be forced to hyperspace!

It really is as far as I can tell. My god, outside of the art house the vast majority of movies today are not even mediocre. It's getting that way with traditionally published scifi books and short stories too.

trostol

pretty sure i will see this in like January...not a fan of going to the theater to start and more so not of huge crowds

Bounder

Drew this a little earlier in the year.  Still think they're destined for each other, R2 and BB-8.

Herzog's such a badass, although probably not my first choice companion for a remote walking holiday.

Darth Maul after his ....operation

How do you survive a bi section? Ridiculous.

Agreed; Star Wars as factual reference is woeful.
Jesus christ you guys, don't you know he used the force to survive ?   ;)

The story of a half mechanical Maul was actually taken from another earlier source, thought I'm not sure what exactly. Was one of the things they adapted from the EU for Clone Wars. I actually always thought this was a really dumb idea, but it was done alright.
This exact ideas was put forth in the prequels to the Rift War Saga by Raymond E. Feist, I forget just which ones off hand, it's been so many years since I've read them.

However, Maul managed to survive his defeat at the hands of Kenobi. Through his hate and will to live, as well as his hatred against Kenobi, he reached out with the Force and grabbed an air vent.[8] He went down the reactor shaft and landed in water. The Sith Lord was then dumped into a container, which was taken to Lotho Minor. As he lay submerged, he fell into unconsciousness, cursing Kenobi.[37]
Arriving at his destination, Maul woke up. He activated his lightsaber and carved his way out of the container, screaming with rage. He struggled to move on through the junkyard world. Soon, he encountered insects the size of his arm and managed to crush one with his own left hand before using his teeth to rip a leg off. But as he started eating, the Sith Lord heard a scream coming from his right.[37]
A sly and mysterious Anacondan named Morley was slithering away in fright from one of Lotho Minor's gigantic machines, the Fire-breather. Maul threw his lightsaber with the Force directly at the Fire-breather's head, piercing it through. The machine instantly fell to the ground, the fire from its mouth extinguished. His weapon returned to him, Maul once again blacked out. Morley wrapped the Zabrak in his coils and brought him into the caves of the planet, which would eventually become his sanctuary.[37]
Maul reawakened and, with all of his anger, was able to use the Force to acquire a six-legged arachnid-like cybernetic apparatus to replace his lost lower body.[37] For twelve years, Maul's memories were lost and he was in a state of near-madness, eating only the small animals that came to the cave, aided in obtaining shelter and sustenance only by Morley, but the only thing he remembered was Obi-Wan Kenobi and how he took his legs.

I kind of thought the space herpe from Ice Pirates was funny

or worse... THIS>>

Conveyor belt castration device. Imagine those jaws clamping down on you.

Oh yeah, this too

I love the original trilogy. The prequels are pure crap. Thank god, Disney will be releasing the original three on blu-ray. I have hope that Abrams will do a "good" job. Expectations can be a bitch, though...
