Yes, it's been round forever.  There used to be fistfights on the House floor, and duels outside.  The intensity comes and goes, in the 60s and into the 70s there were anti-Vietnam War protests that got pretty intense, and plenty of burning in our cities during the civil rights struggle.  Those were limited to specific issues and crossed party lines.  Things toned down after the war in Vietnam ended.

Not being on the receiving end of it, you may not have noticed the politics of personal destruction that took a big step forward during the Reagan era.
